Broadband - Protecting Your Interests
It was recently discovered by the government supported Get Safe Online campaign that one in ten of the 3.5 million UK internet users lost an average of 875 from online fraud within the last year.
Since the introduction of broadband internet, not only has internet traffic increased but more people than ever on going online to shop rather than visiting their local high street. Unfortunately this latest report suggests that this is one of the largest areas of fraud, with 1.7 million of our online nation likely to be falling victim.
Many people look at ways in which they can protect the information stored on their computers. Some of the most popular, yet simple, methods of doing this are as follows:
Firewall applications; essentially stop incoming and outgoing connections to your computer. Depending on how the firewall is set up, it will block any attempts from programs to access the internet and potentially send your information to third parties you have not agreed to. Many of these programs will give you the option to authorise a connection if it is not defined on the pre-authorised lists.
Common firewall applications include Zone Alarm and Norton Internet Security.
Anti-virus applications; will look for any active or inactive viruses present on your computer. Many applications will give you the option to constantly monitor activity or/and the option to perform a manual search of your computers hard-drive.
Common anti-virus applications include AVG and Norton Anti Virus.
Anti spyware applications; is one of the newest types of applications on the scene. It will look through your computer for any oddities in your computers code which could leave your computer open to attacks or thinks will be used to transmit data to un-authorised third parties.
Common Anti Spyware applications include Microsofts Windows Defender and Ad-Aware from Lavasoft.
Many broadband providers package one or two of these applications into the installation software so it may be worthwhile checking any discs before downloading any new software.
This only goes a little way in preventing online fraud by taking information from your computers records. You should always ensure that when purchasing online you are using a recognised firm or they are using industry recognised transaction software/sites that carry a secure certificate when processing your credit details.
Always ensure that your broadband internet is secure before carrying out any major or minor transactions online.
Broadband providers will often include security applications within their installation software discs.
