In response to oil prices, some airlines locked in rates while others took their chances with the volatile oil market. On average fuel costs consume 24% of an airlines operating budget and labor takes another 22%. Pilot unions have a firm grip on labor costs and negotiations with the unions have been futile. As competition continues to drive down ticket prices, airlines struggle to trim fat. More fat means more fuel and airlines are looking for way to lighten their plans in an effort to reduce fuel costs. Many airlines have turned to baggage to solve their fuel cost problems. Two bag limits and excess baggage fees are becoming the norm for most airlines. In October 2005, Jet Blue tightened their baggage policy by reducing their checked bag quantity and size constraints. A black mesh curtain is all that separates me from the coveted wide-seated, leg-supported comfort of a recliner; something everyones grandma has in her living room. That, and double the miles or dollars. Why the class separation for such a basic human need as a comfortable seat when hurdling through space and time?

Since everyone on a plane pays a different amount (thats a fact) and many, like me, are trading rewards for dollars spent on other goods and services for my seat might it not make sense to upgrade every seat to a recliner, figure out the real (OK, subsidized) cost of each seat per flight and charge that? It might cost somewhere between coach and business, and everyone would have a healthier, more enjoyable experience.

In lieu of re-fitting whole planes, the airlines could at least ingratiate themselves to a few by having a drawing on each flight to give away business and first-class seats to lucky coach customers. But then, the flyer who has paid a lot for his superior position would reasonably resent the inequity, unless, of course, it was a plane full of gamblers. This might work on a plane with extra first-class seats going to Las Vegas. The only equitable way to provide comfort is to provide it to everyone, not at the lowest common denominator but the highest. Dream on!

This is the kind of thing I think about as giant engines drone, shades are drawn against an inevitable sunrise, TV-dinner has been served, $5 paid for a glass of mediocre wine, three bad movies have been endured, and two burly men across the aisle keep track of their bets as they play cards all night under miniature stadium lights which keep me awake. Somewhere over Greenland, I cracked the shade and there, filling the entire northern sky, is the Big Dipper. I am flying into the night and the dawn of meaning.

And I am sitting on a puny airline-issue pillow to protect my butt from the steel bar in my economy-plus seat. Only a black mesh curtain separates me from comfort and sleep.

While navigating airport security has obviously become more complicated in recent years, you can still get to your flight quickly and without hassle. If you have an understanding of the current airport procedures before you travel and pack your bags accordingly, you probably wont even notice the issues that cause problems for so many travelers.

Like any other aspect of the travel process, the key to navigating airport security quickly and easily is preparation. Therefore, its a good idea to organize your belongings before arriving at the airport so that you can move as efficiently as possible through the security process. Here are a number of suggestions to help you through security and onto your flight:

Dress appropriately Make sure you avoid wearing metal when traveling. This includes everything from belt buckles and shirts with metal snaps to under-wire bras. If you are wearing any type of metal jewelry, place the items in your carry-on baggage until you have cleared security.
Have your documents ready As you approach the security checkpoint, keep your photo ID, passport and boarding pass in hand to avoid delays.
Be prepared to remove your shoes Airport rules now require all passengers to remove their shoes and place them on the conveyer to be x-rayed. Dont argue with personnel about this procedure; you will be inspected more thoroughly if you do, at risk of missing your flight.
Clean out your pockets Place everything from keys and loose change to cell phones and PDAs in your carry-on baggage before approaching the checkpoint. By removing as many items as you can from your person, you drastically reduce the possibility of setting off a metal detector.
Charge your batteries When you place laptop computers and other electronic devices on the x-ray conveyer, you may be asked to prove that the devices are functional. If you are unable to turn on any of your devices, you are guaranteed an additional delay.
Follow the rule of 3-1-1 Concerning toiletries especially gels and liquids like toothpaste and shampoo you are only allowed to carry on bottles that are three ounces or smaller. All of your toiletries must fit into one quart-size zip-lock bag. This single bag must then be removed from your luggage and placed on the conveyor to be x-rayed. Any items in containers larger than three ounces will be confiscated.
Verify your prescriptions Make sure all medications are in their original bottles with your name listed. You certainly dont want to have essential medications come under scrutiny. Dont complain If airport security asks to search any of your bags, cooperate and be friendly. In all likelihood, you were chosen at random for an additional search and are not the victim of profiling or any other suspicion. It has also been advertised at checkpoints recently that the security area is a sarcasm-free zone. It is the responsibility of airport security to take all threats, jokes and complaints seriously. Simply, act calm and respectful while passing through security and you wont experience any problems.
If you dont need it on the plane, check it Removing clutter from your carry-on bag will allow screeners to process your luggage more quickly. Furthermore, as there are strict limitations on liquids and gels, it is a good idea to place all nonessential items inside a checked bag.
Understand your itinerary If you are traveling to the Caribbean, you might be asked about your travel plans by customs personnel. Make sure everyone in your traveling party knows the details of your flights and the name of your resort. If customs personnel hear conflicting details about your itinerary, you may have to sit through additional questioning.
Check the restricted items list before heading to the airport While pretty much everyone is aware that weapons and explosive materials are forbidden on planes, there are plenty of items that you might not know are restricted. However, if you have something like a pocket knife or lighter in your possession, you can still place it in your checked baggage before proceeding to the checkpoint.

If you know what to expect when approaching airport security, you wont have any troubles. More importantly, you wont cause yourself any unnecessary delays and will always make your flights with time to spare.
