If you are looking for fine French wine and food, consider the Loire Valley region of central France. You may find a bargain, and I hope that youll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour in which we review a white Chenin Blanc from Anjou-Saumur in the central part of the region.
Among Frances eleven wine-growing regions the Loire Valley ranks number three when it comes to the acreage devoted to vineyards. The Loire is Frances longest river running for 620 miles (one thousand kilometers) across the center of the country. In many ways the Loire Valley can be considered as a series of regions. Here they are running from west to east: Nantais whose primary grape is the white Muscadet, Anjou-Saumur whose primary grapes are the white Chenin Blanc and the red Cabernet Franc, Touraine whose primary white grapes are Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc and whose primary red grape is Cabernet Franc, and Central Vineyards whose primary white grape is Sauvignon Blanc and whose primary red grape is Pinot Noir. We will review at least one wine from each of these four areas.
Saumur is a city of about thirty-five thousand inhabitants where the Loire and the Thouet Rivers meet in the Anjou and Saumur zone of the Loire Valley, east of the Nantes and west of Tours. It is a bourgeois city proud of its historic center and Fourteenth Century Church of St-Pierre and the city square of the same name. And of course there is a Loire Valley turreted Castle, the Chteau de Saumur well worth the visit even though the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs (Decorative Arts Museum) and the Muse du Cheval (Equestrian Museum) may be closed to the public.
Saumurs Riding School, the Cadre Noir de Saumur (literally the Black Cadre) was founded well over one hundred fifty years ago. Its instructors, whether military or civilian, wear beautiful black and gold uniforms in public performances that attract up to forty thousand spectators. If you are at all interested in equestrian performances make sure to catch their class act. And stop by the Maison du Vin (House of Wine) for more information on this great wine-growing region.
Before reviewing the Loire wine and imported cheeses that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region. Start with Rillions (Big chunks of Pork cooked in Pork Fat). For your second course savor Bcasse foure au Foie Gras (Woodcock stuffed with Foie Gras). And as dessert indulge yourself with Tarte Tatin (Upside down Apple Tart).
OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Domaine de Saint-Just Saumur Blanc 2005 AC 12.5% alcohol about $13
Lets start by quoting the marketing materials. We see very little white Saumur in our market, so this is a rare treat indeed. Made with 100% Chenin Blanc, it shows the aromatic virtues of the grape coupled with racy acidity. The result is a wine that may be enjoyed in its youth with seafood dishes such as grilled prawns, but will definitely age gracefully for 3-5 years.
My first meal was fried chicken-breast scaloppini, with rice and Turkish salad. This wine was very refreshing and pleasantly acidic. It was palate-cleansing with a lot of lime. It was quite present when pairing with a strong Turkish salad.
The next meal consisted of slow-cooked chicken legs with a mix of Eastern spices, brown rice, and green beans. The Saumur Blanc was quite forward with plenty of fruit and acidity. It was very pleasant.
The final pairing involved whole-wheat spaghetti and hamburgers but no tomato sauce. The wine was refreshingly acidic with a lot of lime. It was very long. While the wine was somewhat flattened by a fruit-juice candy, it displayed delicate fruit and acidity when paired with a good-quality cheesecake.
The first cheese pairing was with a mild Italian Pecorino Friulano cheese. This was no success; the wine became a bit thin and lost a lot of its fruit. Then I tried a nutty Dutch Edam cheese. The wine was moderately fruity and I would say that combination was OK but not great.
Final verdict. I liked this wine and would buy it again. I feel that it was quite good for the price. And theres not all that much more to say about it.

Planning any party can be a daunting task but figuring out how to plan a cocktail party can be a real challenge. Sure, it has the same elements as other parties - plenty of appetizers, good friends and good food and drink but the key ingredient is the variety of drinks you serve.
A cocktail party can be a great way to get together with a diverse array of friends and colleagues. Since cocktail parties are typically only for a few hours, you wont have to worry about spending extended time with these folks - just enough for a couple of drinks.
In order to have a successful cocktail party, there is a bit of planning involved. Heres some tips:
1. Go over the guest list carefully. You want to invite an interesting mix of people that will enjoy mingling over cocktails and appetizers. A diverse group will make for interesting conversation. Make sure you invite a few of your more outgoing friends to get things rolling.
2. Get as much of your food and decoration shopping done ahead of time as you can. Plan your menu out ahead of time and buy the necessary ingredients so you will have them on hand that day and not have to run out 10 minutes before guests arrive. What kind of drinks will you be serving? Make sure you have the mixers and alcohol for any type of cocktail your guests might want.
3. Figure out if you will cook or you need a caterer. A cocktail party doesnt really need anything fancy in the way of food - some cheese and crackers will suffice, but if you want some great hors dourves you might want to look into hiring a caterer. You can have one come to the house and serve and clean up, or you can buy appetizers and pop them in the oven yourself. You can even order gourmet appetizers online and get great eats delivered right to your home.
4. Do you need a bartender? Unless you want to be standing behind the bar all night mixing drinks then you might want to think about hiring a bartender. Or assign one of your friends that like to do that sort of thing, its a great way to meet and talk to everyone at the party!
5. Decorate ahead of time. Save yourself some stress on the day of the party by decorating the day before. This can be a big job and doing it ahead of time will allow for you to run out to the store without impacting your guest arrival schedule if you have forgotten something. When decorating your room, make sure the furniture is pushed aside so guests dont trip on it. Heres some of the things you can do ahead of time so that you can enjoy your party more:
- Set out all the floral arrangements and centerpieces
- Have your cocktail glasses shined and ready
- Choose the music you want to listen to and load it into your CD player
- Double check your beverage and appetizer list and make sure you have what you need.
Your cocktail party can be a fun time even for you, the host, if you are organized and plan ahead. Remember to make lots of lists so you wont forget something at the last minute. Most importantly, relax and have fun!

To decant or not to decant? The great wine experts disagree. If you are a wine newbie, who do you listen to?
There are two main reasons why we might decant wine. One is to get rid of sediment. The other is to aerate the wine or allow it to breathe, so releasing the aromas that have been trapped in the bottle. (Some would say there is a third reason, the most important the attractive appearance of the glowing red decanter on the table!)
You may have heard people tell you that you can let the wine breathe by removing the cork an hour or two before serving. This actually has no effect at all. The neck of the bottle is too narrow to allow any air to get to it.
So if you want the wine to breathe, you have to decant. The question is, when? Yes, it does release the aromas. The problem is, by the time you drink it, in many cases the aromas have gone for good!
General advice that seems to work is:
Young tannic red wines decant at least an hour before serving and experiment with periods of up to six hours. This applies to wines like red Bordeaux, Cabernets, Rhone reds, heavy Zinfandels, Australian Shiraz, Portuguese reds.
Young red Burgundy, Pinot Noirs and Spanish wines decant just before serving.
Fully mature wines also decant just before serving, but dont be in a hurry to finish off the decanter! Just give it as long as it needs.
Stand the wine upright for a day or two before you are going to serve it. This is the best preparation for decanting.
You can use a fine strainer to remove the sediment. But this isnt necessary as long as the sediment is spread throughout the wine through decanting.
Of course, decanting just means pouring from the bottle into another receptacle. So for wines that should be decanted just before serving, you can just pour them straight into the glass from the bottle. But of course, a decanter does look better on the table than a bottle!
Or how about a jug? For me, there are few greater delights on earth than sitting at a table by the waters edge at a Greek taverna, with a jug of local wine (and an ordinary tumbler to drink it from!) No arguments about decanting there!

The first question we must ask is: Does the wine need to be decanted? That is, does it need to be poured from the bottle into a decanter? A decanter is basically a carafe or other container large enough to hold the bottles contents? There are two basics reasons why you would answer yes.The first reason is ... Absinthe is a delicious treat to enjoy on special occasions and when you want to impress your friends. This is the most straightforward way to drink absinthe. There are “absinthe cocktails” as well, but this is the traditional method. Enjoy!
How to Drink Absinthe
There are a couple of different ways to drink absinthe. The most popular is the Traditional Method, which is as follows:
You will need:
-Absinthe and a glass.
-An absinthe spoon (or regular slotted spoon).
-Sugar cube(s)
-Ice cold water.
Process:
-Pour about one shot worth of absinthe into a glass.
-Place the absinthe spoon on the glass.
-Put a sugar cube on the spoon.
-Slowly pour four to six parts ice-cold water over the sugar cube so that it dissolves in the absinthe. (five parts water to one part absinthe is about the average ratio.)
-Stir and drink!
There is another method called the Czech Method, which is a lot of fun!
Same idea as the traditional method, but here is the difference:
-After you pour the shot of absinthe, dip the sugar cube so that it absorbs some of the liquid.
-Put the sugar cube on the absinthe spoon and hold it a few inches above the glass.
-Light the sugar cube with a match or lighter. Let the sugar cube flame and caramelize, dripping into the absinthe.
-Pour the water into the glass, stir, and drink!
Now that it is a treat!

A homes dcor ultimately reflects the style of its occupants. Those who engage in hobbies and collecting that is near and dear to their heart will frequently display corresponding pieces in an attractive display in their home. In addition to infusing the home with the occupants unique personality, such a display creates an instant conversation piece that will engage visitors and give them a feel for the homes overall style. For wine connoisseurs, the display of a variety of wines that they particularly enjoy can be both functional and decorative. To this end, a beautiful wine rack design can do the most to display your wine with visual impact.
When choosing a wine rack design, begin initially by determining the specific material that would most complement your home. Wine racks are made from everything from solid wood and metal to wrought iron and come in a variety of styles from contemporary to antique. A wine rack design should fit with your homes overall style, allowing it to merge seamlessly with the other elements in your home.
Functionality should also be a consideration when choosing a wine rack design. If you are content to have a wine rack that simply stores and displays a couple of good wine bottles then you should look for simple designs; these should also be relatively inexpensive. However, if you would also like to display stemware, barware, or additional items, then seek out a more comprehensive wine rack design. While these will undoubedtly be higher priced, it could be well worth the expense if the wine rack design will offer you a greater level of efficiency.
Your space restrictions should also be considered when it comes to a wine rack design. While some standing wine racks can fit within a corner of your home or against a wall, there are others that hang from the ceiling, maximizing space for those with a smaller living environment.
Visit home furniture stores and large retail stores that offer a display of home goods. You will easily find a beautiful wine rack design that works for your particular purposes. The Internet also offers a comprehensive listing of websites that sell wine racks online. You can shop from the comfort of your own home and have the wine rack design shipped right to your door.
A stunning wine rack design is a relatively inexpensive way to complete the look of your home and create a sophisticated display that reflects your personality.

Champagnes are sparkling wines originally hailed from the wine region of northeastern part of France. The area is highly recognized for its production of the finest champagnes sold in the market worldwide.
While the word champagne was utilized by several makers of wines in other regions of the world, numerous countries are using this term only for products which come from the appellation of champagne.
The high recognition of champagne contributes to champagne makers in promoting this kind of wine. The houses of champagne advertised the image of the wine as aristocratic and royal beverage where wealthy individuals enjoy sipping.
There are nearly a hundred champagne houses, with 15,000 smaller vine-growing manufacturers in the region Champagne, France. These industries manage several 32,000 land hectares of winery, employing around 10,000 individuals. Their annual sales reach a total of 300 million.
Champagne producers can be classified into seven categories: the big companies who purchase grapes and produce the wine, the cooperatives, the growers, the association of growers, a cooperative member, a brand name and the wine merchant who sells using its own name or label.
Champagne belongs to a sole appellation. Most of this wine is made from a mixture of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Typically, the color of the beverage is light although it is being produced using red grapes. There is a gentle extraction process used to minimize the time its juice is in contact with skins that gives a red wine drink its color.
Most champagne sold in the market is non-vintage. They are manufactured from a combination of years where its exact blend is just mentioned on its label by few growers. On the other hand, those that are produced from a lone vintage are tagged by the year. A lot of champagnes are manufactured from bought-in grape fruits by some well-known brand names like Mumm or Veuve Clicquot.
Champagne is commonly served in a flute. This is pictured as a long stem with a tall and narrow bowl and an opening. This considerably preserves the aroma and the bubbles of the drink.
Champagne also brings a few health benefits to human. One is to aid the brain in coping with the trauma caused by Parkinsons, Alzheimers and stroke diseases.

Appreciating to drink a rare and fine wine can give you the desire to start creating your own wine-cellar. Collecting wine can be a very pleasant hobby. Especially when you seek the bottle of wine which is different from the others.
If you wish to start a wine collection, you will have to spend a little more money than you think. Indeed, wine collecting is expensive. The few councils exempted below will help you to start your own wine-cellar.
The space
First thing to do is to find a place where you will place your wine-cellar. You can store it in your house but you will have to find the good place: sufficient space and ideal temperature (50 up to 65F).
You must also plan which type of wine you will include in your wine-cellar. So many options are available that it is sometimes difficult to choose.
In order to better prepare your new wine bottles storage, you will test some various types of wine. You will learn much by yourself ; for example: identify wine tastes. As you probably already know, there are many differences between wines coming from great vintages and wines coming from new or immediately processed wine and that some wines can age, others cannot.
If you have just started a wine-collecting or built a wine-cellar, you should avoid buying your wine in great quantities as long as you are not sure about the type of wine that you plan to add to your cellar.
Wine Culture
Participate in purses and tasting events. In these places, you can meet other persons who are passionate by wine collecting and who will give you the best addresses and suppliers. You will also learn more about the different brands and their prices.
You can also learn a lot by surfing on the Internet and searching for information about wine; by subscribing to some informative newsletters ; by buying some books and read them in order to familiarize with your new hobby.
Supplier
You will also have to choose a good supplier.
While visiting your wine supplier, tell him that you are collecting wine bottles ; this person will inform you if the wine that you want to buy can age in a cellar or not.
Also ask your supplier if the wines you are collecting are available in his inventory.
If you hope to collect wines from other areas, he may be able to give you contact information for finding the wines you are interested in.
Wine suppliers information and addresses are available online.
Wine from other Countries
If you plan to collect wine coming from other countries, your supplier will be able to give you the right addresses. Also, you can make a search on Google in order to find the best foreign wine supplier or mail directly the vine-grower or even the castle where the wine is bottled.
A French proverb said: “It is while forging that one becomes blacksmith”. Perhaps you will realize that collecting wine becomes a passion and that you want to start your own wine selling business. When you will have bought a sufficient quantity of rare wine bottles, you will be able to start your new business and sell your greatest bottles.

In this world where inflation is the order of the day, and salaries are stagnant making the ends meet, even with only the basic amenities, has become a great challenge. The problem gets compounded when you find yourself crave for a few small pleasure that have now moved out of your reach such as a good glass of wine occasionally.
People tend to get frustrated when they are unable to have a little enjoyment every once in a while. And when they do, their productivity goes down; their interaction quality gets down, and so on which catapults the person into depression. To cut a long story short, it is better to find ways of indulging in yourself every now and then, to prevent the possibility of depression. Many times, just a good glass of wine with a good hot meal can do wonders.
Wine is expensive, true. However, there are many ways in which anyone can make quite good wine right at home with ingredients that are already there on the kitchen shelf. That means, you can make good wine at no additional expense to you, no fancy tools, etc.
The basic tools you will need to make wine at home are simple too. You will need a container where you could measure a gallon of liquid. Then, you will need a normal cup to measure sugar. You will need a container with cover where you will have to agitate the mixture to mix it well. It has to be covered or you will not be able to shake it vigorously and hence the quality of your home-made wine will suffer.
You will need a water heater, where you will warm a bit of water to dissolve the yeast (or hydrate it). This could be done in a cup also.
Next you will a few balloons actually you will need only one, but sometimes the balloon bursts and you will need to replace it fast, so it is always good to have 2-3 extra ones on hand. Since the balloon will need to be fixed very tightly to the mount of the container, it is good if you also have some twine or a good rubber band to fix it. It so happens that the fermentation will push the balloon off the container sometimes.
Once the wine is done (you will know that process is over when the balloon that was tied at the mouth of the container deflates) you will need to take out the wine through a strainer into another container. The strainer should be extra-extra fine since anything else will allow the residue pass through giving you a murky wine. The wine should be totally crystal clear and for that purpose the best tool would be a clean piece of cheese cloth.
Once the wine has been strained thoroughly and has absolutely no dregs in it, your wine is ready for consumption. Before doing so, you would need to store in appropriate containers. Hence, you will need some nice bottles (there are a lot of fancy bottles available at very competitive prices) to pour it in. These bottles should be sealed ideally with a cork. So, for each bottle you should have an appropriately sized cork to the bottle can be sealed for storage.
Storage, brings us to the next step of tool requirement. You can store wine in the fridge this would be for immediate use and on a specifically designed for this purpose, wine rack. A wine rack makes it possible to keep the wine bottle in a reclined position, which is the best way to store it. The longer it stays this way, the better the wine becomes. So, the quality of the wine stack should be such that it can be used for a long time.
All in all these are the tools you will need to make your own wine at home.
