Professionals advocate an open stance for the short golf shots. From 100 yards in to the pin. I have messed around with this over the years, not being able to make up my mind which is more successful for me.
You will either like or not like what I am about to say.
An open stance is when your feet and hips are set up along a line to the left of the target, while the club blade is directed directly towards the target.
When making such shots, you want your body movement reduced to a minimum. With most of your weight on your left foot for the duration of the shot.
Standing with an open stance will help you achieve this.
Also, an open stance will help you to hit from in to out with little thought about this aspect of the swing.
Your back swing will be more upright and you will have a steeper down swing resulting in a sharply descending blow which is just what is needed to pitch the ball in the way you want.
Have a look at this and experiment. However, there are no rules about how you should hit hour shots. If you are having better results with a square stance then please do not change.
All you want is to hit the ball in the air, have it land near the pin and stop.
If you are achieving this on a consistent basis, there is certainly no need to change anything.

The key to becoming a better golfer is to learn the techniques of a better golf swing. Beginners need to learn the basics of the golf swing to be able to play the game, but it requires a lot of practice to learn this important part of the game of golf. This should come as no surprise, it is the same in any sport, if you want to get better you have to practice and in golf your swing is crucial.
A better golf swing is very important, but the golfer should not rely solely on the swing techniques. He or she should also consider the different aspects of a better swing.
Don’t try to practice your golf swing while playing a round of golf. Use the driving range for that. The driving range enables you to concentrate only on your swing, making the practice more effective.
If you are on the golf course, you should think about the proper angle to put the ball on the green. You should concentrate on hitting the ball rather than thinking about the kind of swing you will use to hit the ball. You want the swing to become automatic.
It isn’t easy not think about the swing when you are playing golf. Only a few golfers are able to block thoughts of how to better their swing while hitting the golf ball. They are mostly professional golfers who have honed their skills for a long time.
The key to a developing a better swing is not thinking about the swing while trying to get the ball in the hole. You should learn to relax and concentrate. Thinking about your swing should only be done when you are practicing it or at home, if you try to practice it during a round, your golf partners may think that you are having a hard time hitting the ball. This is because thinking about the swing while trying to pit the ball in the right spot will divide your attention.
Consistent and correct practice, hopefully with the supervision of an instructor is the key to becoming a better player. There are no magic bullets that will do the trick, your future in golf depends on your determination and the condition of your muscles.
Learning this technique is not easy. You have to be patient and try to put more concentration on the game. Condition yourself physically and mentally to improve and enjoy your game.

If you ever compete in match play events, you need to know how to approach them in order to get good results. If you think match play is the same as stroke play in golf, then read on because Im going to tell you what you need to do in order to succeed.
Match play pits one golfer (or one team) against another. Unlike in stroke play, in which total score counts, the golfers compete for each hole. Whoever shoots the lowest score on a hole wins the hole. If the two golfers (or teams) finish with identical scores, the hole is halved. Whoever wins the most holes wins the match. If the players (or teams) finish with the same score, the match is halved. Match play does not usually affect your golf handicap. These are the basics.
This head-to-head confrontation, as golf instruction manuals tell you, radically changes how you play the game. Some golf tips urge you to be more aggressive in match play than in stroke play. Other golf tips urge you to play your normal game. What determines how you play is where you stand on the hole, where your opponent stands on the hole, and where the two of you stand in the match.
Most golf instruction will tell you that match play is a balancing act. Youre always weighing the need to put pressure on your opponent against the need to win the hole. The player who plays the best under pressure, regardless of where his golf handicap is, usually wins the match. Handling the pressure is not something golf lessons prepares you for. Its something you need to experience yourself.
On the tee its more important than ever to hit the fairway with your drive. If youre first off the tee, hitting a good drive increases the pressure on your opponent to also hit a good drive. And vice versa. If you hit a bad drive, that takes the pressure off your opponent. And vice versa. The object is to apply pressure as much as possible during the match.
On the fairway you need to be aware of where your opponent is and what his or her score is on the hole at all times. Keep in mind those golf lessons that tell you to maintain focus. You can hit a bad shot on the hole and still not lose the hole if your opponent also hits a bad shot. In fact, you can shoot an 8 on a hole and win the hole, if your opponent shoots a 9. The key to winning a hole in match play is knowing where your opponent stands on the hole and not panicking if he or she hits a good shot. The next shot could be out of bounds.
On the green, how aggressive you are on any putt depends on where your opponent is, where you are, and where you stand on the hole. Normally, if you had a difficult down hill putt, youd play the shot conservatively, so as to not slip ten feet past the hole and cost yourself additional strokes. Thats what most golf tips emphasize. In match play, where your opponent is and what his or her score is dictates putting strategy.
If your opponent is laying 3 and is five inches from the whole, chances are he or she is going to sink the putt for a 4. If youre laying 3, you need to sink the putt to tie your opponent for the hole, so you might as well be aggressive with it.
On the other hand, if your opponent is laying 3 and is twenty feet from the hole, you might as well play that downhill putt more conservatively, if you are also laying 3. You dont want to run the ball 10 feet past the hole. It could cost you an additional stroke or two and, quite possibly, the hole. Always know where your opponent is on the green and what he or she is shooting before deciding on your putting strategy.
Conceding putts is an issue in match play. You dont have to concede a putt, even if your opponent has conceded one to you. But most golfers do if its short (within 2 feet) and its not going to cost you the hole. Some players will concede short putts right up until crunch time, then make his opponent putt everything out just to put some additional pressure on him.
Its also good to know if your opponent is a good or bad putter. If hes a poor putter, you might make him putt everything out. Chances are your opponent may 3 putt or even 4 putt on the hole, giving you the hole if you 2 putt.
And then there are going to be times when you need a hero shot to win the hole or the match. If the hole or the match is on the line and you have a difficult shot, which youd play conservatively in stroke play, you want to be more aggressive. If you play the shot conservatively, as most golf instruction dictates, youll probably lose the hole and/or the match anyway, so you might as well go for it in the hopes of saving the hole or match.
The key in match play is knowing when to be aggressive and when to be conservative. Match play is not about lowering your golf handicap. Its about winning holes. Where you stand on the hole, where your opponent stands on the hole, and where the two of you stand in the match dictates strategy. Try not to let the pressure get to you and try to increase the pressure on your opponent whenever its prudent. And dont panic if you fall behind early. You can still win the match, if you dont give up.

Golf as we know it was invented in Scotland, but its roots stretches back into Flanders. The first record of Chole is from 1353 and portrays a something that could be described as a mix between hockey and golf played in Flanders (Belgium). The game was preferably played on ice and the players used sticks curved at the bottom to move balls from starting point to finish point. Since Scottish and Dutch merchants traveled a lot between the two regions and traded with each other, the game played in Flanders soon spread to Scotland where it developed on the grassy Scottish fields and soon ceased to be a winter game. It was the Scots that started to dig holes in the ground instead of simply selecting a finishing point. Digging a hole in the Dutch ice had naturally not been a good idea.
Even though the game changed a great deal after being introduced in Scotland, the balls where still often imported from Flanders. The more patriotic Scots claim that golf instead evolved from different stick-and-ball games that we know were played all over the British Isles as early as the Middle Ages. These games were inspired by a stick-and-ball game introduced to the British Isles by the Romans.
The first record of the term golf is from 1457 when King James II of Scotland outlawed golf as well as soccer, since the games were so popular that they made the king’s archers skip their practice and play golf and soccer instead. James III re-issued this law in 1471, and James IV followed in his footsteps with a new ban in 1491. Golf did however continue its development in Scotland despite the ban. Even during these early days, all the essential parts of golf had already been invented. The players used a club to swing a ball into a hole in the ground. The player that managed to get the ball into the hole using the least amount of strokes won.
The word gold is derived from the Old Scots words goff or glove, and these words in turn derive from kolf or kolve, medieval Dutch words that simply meant club. When the words kolf and kolve were imported to Scottland, the old Scottish dialect transformed the letter K into G, and the game was called Goff, Glove, Golve and Gowl. During the 16th century, the word Golf became established.
The ban on golf had been issued in a time when Scotland was preparing to defend itself from the English. In 1502, the Treaty of Glasgow made it possible for James I of England (King James IV) to lift the ban. He even began to play himself and turned into a keen golf enthusiast. The game became highly fashionable and its popularity spread over the British Isles during the 16th century, partly thanks to King Charles I who loved to play golf. Mary Queen of Scots had French roots and she introduced the game to the French while she attended school in France. The word caddie actually steams from a French word cadet. The cadets of the French Military helped Mary Queen of Scots when she played golf.
Two of the oldest golf courses in the world are Leith and the Old Links. Leith is located close to Edinburgh and the Old Links is found at Musselburgh. When King Charles I received the news about the Irish rebellion in 1641 he was actually standing at Leith. The Old Links was founded in 1672. The first international golf match took place at Leith in 1682. The Duke of York and George Patterson (playing for Scotland) managed to beat two English players. Strangely enough, it wasnt until 1744 that the first known golf rules were written down and published in Edinburgh.
The game of golf has of course changed a lot over the years that it has been played and more and more technology is involved in and surrounding the game. An example among many of such technologies that has affected the experience of golf is golf carts. All golf carts from the most basic ones to more elaborate models such as the Hummer golf cart has made it easier to enjoy golf regardless of your physical contition.

If you have decided to take up golf, you are probably in search of free golf tips. Good news! Youve found them! These free golf tips are designed with every golfer in mind, and they are beneficial to anyone who reads them.
The first tip is to beware of tips! Thats right. Many well meaning golfers will offer you a great deal of advice. What many people fail to realize is that what works for one golfer probably wont work for others. These tips, however, are for all golfers.
Enjoy the game. Getting mad isnt much fun. If you arent enjoying the game, you need to find out why, and fix the problem. Getting upset over bad swings or problem areas wont fix anything, and it will only serve to take all of the fun out of the game. This is a game that tests your skill and technique but it is still a game, and games are meant to be enjoyed!
Be a great sport even if you arent great at golf. Be respectful to the other players. Be still and quiet when they are taking their shots. Dont criticize or make fun of the way they stand, shoot, or grip the club.no matter how good you think your own game is. Good sportsmanship is everything, and without it, you wont have any golfing companions in a very short period of time.
Golf responsibly. Do not litter the course. If the grass is loosened and turned when you shoot, use your foot to replace it. Wait your turn if you come upon a group at the next tee dont rush them. Use caution when driving golf carts, and use caution again when you take your shots to avoid hitting houses, buildings, animals, or other golfers. Leave the course better than you found it.
When you practice, practice at the hardest holes on the coursedont take the easy way out, practicing only on the easy holes, thinking you are making headway you arent. Practice on the hardest tees, and the hardest putts. Put yourself in the traps, and practice getting out of them. Imagine worst case scenarios and set them up. This is what will make you a better golfer.
Play miniature golf, and take it more seriously but still have fun. Playing miniature golf is a great way to improve your putting skills. Many seasoned golfers laugh at this suggestion but its true! Good miniature golf courses provide really challenging obstacles that you must put through, under, around and over.some even offer more challenges than you will ever find on your local golf course greens!
Keep your eyes open for used training aids. If they are reasonably priced buy them! Not all training aids will help you, but unfortunately, you wont know which ones will unless you try them out first. Get together with golfing friends and go in together to buy golfing aids that you can share. The aids that are available on the market today will help you improve your game a great deal, in a short amount of time.
Read a lot and play even more. There are lots of techniques that you can learn from golfing websites, golf books, and golf magazines but you will learn them faster out on the course! Read it once, and then go try it. If you need to, print it out and carry it with you but go put the theory into practice and practice, practice, practice! You can learn the concept sitting in your living room, but you will never make that concept work for you if you dont take it out onto the course with you!
If you cant get on the course, and you have some spare time and enough room, practice your swing. You dont need a ball for this. Consider using a training club during these times to help build strength as well. If you take the time to practice your swing several times a day, you will find that you have a perfect swing for you in short order! If your golf game gets rained out use the time to practice your swing, or practice your putting indoorsbut dont let that time go to waste! The best free golf tips you will ever receive will all include the word practice!
We provide you with information on the best golf tips available, instructions on how to get your strokes down and much more. Dozens of free golf tips waiting for you, come and take a look! http://www.golf-game-tip.com/

Spring is right around the corner and that means it is time to start planning your golf vacation. Before you and your golf buddies plan a trip to Myrtle Beach, Scottsdale, Las Vegas, Hilton Head or other great golf destinations, you need to be aware of one fact.
Many discount golf vacation packagers don’t really care if you receive a first-class golf vacation. You heard me right. Not every discount or even non-discount golf vacation packages are up to par.
There is a lot of money to be made in the golf package market. In Myrtle Beach where you can toss a Titleist out of a moving car and almost always have it land on one of the one hundred plus fairways, golf package providers are almost as plentiful as attorneys.
You might think this competition would benefit the golfer. But unfortunately, like any other opportunity, this can bring out scam artists and companies with bad business practices.
So if you and your golfing group want to enjoy your golf trip and know that you will be playing great golf courses, here are a couple of tips to make sure you get what you pay for on your next golf vacation.
- Watch out for one-size-fits-all discount golf vacation packages with rock-bottom prices unless you are will to play sub-par golf courses and stay in one-star accommodations. A golf package that promises a three-night stay with two rounds of golf for $129 will usually equate to a rock-bottom golf vacation experience. Don’t settle for cookie-cutter deals. Make sure to customize a golf package that fits your group’s needs.
Make sure the company you buy your golf package from knows the local golf scene and better yet, lives and plays golf in the area. Many golf packages are sold through phone bank fulfillment centers where the operators rely on outdated information and know little or nothing about yearly maintenance schedules. Getting tee times at a lower-rung course is bad enough. Don’t compound the problem with horrible course conditions.
Don’t gamble with your next golf vacation package. The best advice I can give you is to ask questions and request testimonials from past customers. If the discount golf vacation package provider is unwilling to work with you, then don’t play golf with them.

It is well known that in every professional sport athletes perform a series of flexibility exercises and drills to prepare them to play a game. The game of golf is no different. Unseen to the general public, many PGA Tour players perform a series of golf flexibility exercises to prepare them to play golf. It is done prior to hitting the driving range or putting green. It is a process of getting the muscles and joints of body ready to swing a golf club. Most every golfer on the planet understands the benefit of a warm-up program to get the body ready to play golf or any sport for that matter. Unfortunately for us the time required to perform a comprehensive golf warm-up program with golf flexibility exercises is not reasonable. Not reasonable because of time restrictions on our busy lives.
For example, we set our tee time for Friday at 1:30. Our plan when we leave the house in the morning is I will get to course at 1:00, hit a few putts, chip for 10 minutes, head to the range, and be at the first tee with a few minutes to spare. Unfortunately, our plans sometimes do not play out as we intended.
We get stuck with a client on the phone, a conference call runs long, we get stuck in traffic. Whatever the case may be we are caught rushing to the golf course, getting to the course with 10 minutes to spare, jump out of the car, tying our golf shoes, get to the first tee with 5 minutes to spare, havent hit a shot or putted.Do I need to go on?
Probably not.
It is a situation that happens to us all, and I as am guilty of it as you. However as strong as I suggest performing a good warm-up, and putting yourself in the correct frame of mind for the round, life at times just does not allow us to do it.
What are we to do in such situations?
I first off would suggest not utilizing the John Daly grip and rip it motto if you get to the first tee without warming-up. I have seen this (myself included) lead to a myriad of problems from the get go.
I can remember a few years ago I took this approach and I think made a triple bogey on the first hole. My drive went left into the rough, second shot to the right, approach shot over the green into the bunker, bunker shot rolled 20 feet past the hole. Need I go on?
Lets just say I learned my lesson. First and foremost if you are caught in this type of situation lets not panic. Lets put a plan together to start the round out on the right foot and keep you in a positive frame of mind.
My first suggestion is not to rush and attempt to hit 3 putts, pull out driver take a few hacks, and then tee it up.
Lets take the 5 minutes we have and get the body warmed-up and ready to swing a golf club. How can we do this? Simply by putting together a series of golf stretches to loosen you up. Golf flexibility exercises will loosen the muscles and joints of your body. Preparing them to swing a golf club. They are simple to perform and can get your body and mind more ready to play than just a few practice swings with the driver. This will take a couple of minutes to perform, but it will help you get the body ready to swing the golf club.
Once we have got the body loosened up lets get the mind in the correct space. I have seen all too often the tempo of a swing is way out of whack when a golfer lacks the time to properly warm-up. Attempt to relax, take a few deep breaths, and get the body to slow down a little. This should definitely help create some better tempo in your swing from the start.
Also, take your time. Once it is your turn to hit, take a little extra time. Take a few extra practice swings, relax, find your tempo, and match your first swing to the tempo of your practice swing. This is a tip I learned from Dean Reinmuth (top 50 Golf Digest teaching pros).
If you are not comfortable over the ball, step away, take a series of practice swings until you find the right swing and then perform that same swing over the golf ball. It has done wonders for my game.
I would also suggest continuing to take extra time on every shot until you feel comfortable and have found your swing. This might not occur until the second or third hole, but it is okay. It allows you to relax, make a good swing, and make a good shot.
Finally, when you are rushed I think course management can really help. Think about it for a moment. Why not on the first tee pull out 3-wood instead of driver, even if it is a par five. Hit a nice shot into the fairway, lay-up, and play for par? Again, starting off with par or even bogey is a lot better than a double or triple, both for your scorecard and mental frame of mind.
So if you are rushing to the first tee to get your golf game going lets review the protocol. First and foremost lets be smart and utilize the time we have at hand. Lets take the 5 minutes we have to warm-up the body for the golf swing. We will do this through the implementation of a series of golf flexibility exercises. These golf exercises will get your muscles and joints ready to swing a golf club. Once the body is ready the next step is taking your time. Take a few extra practice swings with the golf club. This will allow you to find the tempo of your golf swing. Finally lets be smart with our course management skills. Think about what is the best golf shot to make and play within ourselves until our body and mind is ready to go.

One out of every two golfers will incur a lower back injury during their playing careers, are you one of them?
Almost every golfer on the planet has at some time or another felt their lower back tighten up on the course, after a round, or even getting out of bed. Why is this so? The reason for the high number of lower back injuries in the sport of golf is a result of the golf swing itself!
The golf swing is a rotational movement. It requires you to rotate around a fixed spine. The lower back takes the brunt of the pressure of the twisting and turning.
The rotation and torque can make your lower back very easily fatigued or injured. The question to ask is how to counteract the stresses placed on the lower back?
There are a number of ways to help you dodge the injury bullet when it comes to the lower back.
Lower back injuries generally occur because of three different reasons.
1. Poor Swing Mechanics
2. Weak Lower Back Muscles
3. Workloads
The first category has to do with your swing mechanics.
A research study (dont quote me on the exact %) indicated that the rate of lower back injuries in the amateur golfer was 60% higher than professionals in the sport. The study determined the number was statically higher in amateurs because of the shear forces created in the golf swing.
The amount of shear forces created in the amateurs golf swing was exponentially higher than the professional. Professionals have a much more efficient golf swing, lowering the shear forces placed upon the lower back compared to the typical amateur.
The second category refers to the physical aqspect of the golf swing.
The lower back is used extensively in order to swing the golf club properly. If the lower back is weak, over time it will become fatigued. Once the muscles of the lower back become fatigued, the ability to swing the club with the same force becomes much more difficult. Additionally, once the lower back is tired, and you continue to perform the movements of the golf swing. The lower back will become sore and eventually you will injure it.
The final reason golfers tend to have many lower back injuries is workloads.
Simply put, workloads are the number of swings you take within a certaintime frame. For example, a PGA Tour player during a competitive week on Tour may swing a club well over 1,000 times. This is the total number of swings over a 7 day period can be defined as the Tour players workloads for that week.
A lower back injury can incur if the workloads for any golfer become too high. Regardless of the efficiency within the golf swing mechanics or the strength of the lower back, too high of a workload will lead to injury. For example, in you were to go to the range and execute 1,000 swings of the golf club in a 3-hour time frame. The likelihood of a lower back injury is very high. Why? Because the workloads are too high within the give time fame for any golfer!
The key in regards to workloads is to match up the efficiency of your golf swing and the strength within the lower back. If you have poor golf swing mechanics and a weak lower back, your workloads should be very low. If you have moderately efficient golf swing mechanics and a fairly strong lower back. The workloads can be higher.
What is the best way to avoid a lower back injury?
Simple, it is a 3-step process.
Number one; develop efficient golf swing mechanics. This can be done through proper instruction, practice, and time.
Number two; implement a golf fitness program into your exercise routine. This type of program will strengthen your lower back in relation to the golf swing.
Number three; monitor the number of swings you make with the club in relation to points one and two.

Exercises for golfers may seem like an oxymoron, but Im here to tell they are most definitely not. Golf is physical! Golf causes injury! Golf can very easily break down the body! To hit the ball maximum distance, your body has to have a higher level of golf specific strength and flexibility.
The above statements are fact.
To play your best golf you need to implement exercises for golfers as soon as possible. The sooner you start, the sooner you will see results on the course.
So whats the difference between going to the gym and plopping down on machines and doing exercises for golfers?
First offdo you sit when you play golf?
Then why would you sit in a controlled machine thinking it will improve your golf?
Golf is on your feet and in a dynamic position (golf posture).
Because the demands for golf are so unique, you need to approach your golf improvement from a different angle than just going into a gym and thinking it will help your golf game.
Exercises for golfers doesnt just mean strength exercises. Youve got to do golf stretching exercises as well.
Whenever I hear a golfer say he/she needs to stretch moremy first thought is they are missing the boat. Golf stretching without golf exercise is not permanent flexibility.
Heres an example for you.
Stretch a rubber band. Now stretch it more and more. What happens to the rubber band? It gets brittle and eventually breaks.
Picture your muscles just like that rubber band.
The winning combination is golf exercise and golf stretching. This will give you the best results.
When putting together your exercises for golfers program, take a look at the body position required to make a mechanically sound swing.
Once you realize this dynamic and very unique position, you can do golf exercises specific to this position.
Things to remember.
- Do the majority of your golf exercises on your feet.
- Do them in your golf posture if at all possible.
- Keep your knees flexed, just like your golf swing.
- Do as many rotational exercises as possible.
- Make sure to do the follow through side of the swing.
- Do a high enough repetition to promote golf muscular endurance.
Exercises for golfers can be fun and keep you motivated to stick with your program. Adherence is the main culprit for lack of results. Like any fitness or weight loss program, if you dont do it consistently you wont see the results.
Staying motivated by picturing the end-result on the course will be a huge help. Envision you on that first tee a more powerful and fit golfer. Picture blasting your drives by all your playing partners. And lastly, paint a strong visual of you having the lowest score consistently when you play in your normal golf groups.
I hope you now have a better understanding of exercises for golfers.

Your perfect golf vacation with your friends starts and stops with you. Toss the vacation package brochures in a heap and design your own ideal golf getaway. This is the final of four articles to assist you in providing an outing for yourself and your friends that will make you want to do it every year (as we have for 19 years running).
From the last article, you are now at the minus one month point. So far you have rallied the troops, picked the dates, selected the lodging and golf courses and are in the final preparation stage. You will soon see your friends smiling faces at the airport baggage claim. The final preps and smoothly running the whole show are child’s play. The tough part was getting your bunch of friends to buy the tickets to enjoy the event. Here are a few things you will want to do before the scream of the aircraft’s tires on the tarmac.
1. Transportation. The limiting factor is arrival and departure from the airport due to clubs AND suitcases. If you can just barely stuff everyone in the vehicles at this point, the rest of the week is gravy. From your experience, you know that when you pack up four guys to go golfing locally, you will entirely fill the trunk of a full sized car. With that in mind, you should plan on a full sized car for every three people. We use one minivan/SUV augmented with cars for our adventures. Just make sure you allow for the limiting case.
You need to arrange these rental vehicles ahead of time, but you can only drive one yourself. Here is the minus one-month mandatory. When you figure out your vehicle requirements, contact the group to arrange among them and you who will contact and rent the remaining vehicles. There will probably be some in your group that have existing discounts and can score a great rate. Hash this one out via email.
2. Entertainment. Unless you are going to the deserts in Arizona or get exceedingly lucky, you will have a rain day or two. You will also have a bunch of time at night after golf (after you have all told your lies). We suck that time up pretty effectively watching the golf channel, ESPN, playing cards, or watching videos. The latter is what you can address ahead of time. We have a guy that is pretty good at selecting movies to watch and we task him to bring them with him. Movies like “Gladiator”, “Miracle”, etc. are big. More risque’ titles are optional. On severe rain days, we also have gone bowling (a real hoot), done the local movie theater, and toured the area.
3. Checklists. After about ten years of being asked twenty times per day where we were playing the next day, or when we had to leave, or what was for supper, or who stole my teddy bear, I finally started typing out these things. I make a copy of each and post sporadically throughout the house. I make individual laminated cards and hand to each golfer. Know what? It reduced the questions to half and now when asked, I say that I can’t remember. Let me walk over to the frig and read it for you. Here are the things I prepare ahead of time:
-#- Listing of course, tee times, course contact number, and departure time. I base departure time on MapBlast directions and factor in a stop for ice for the coolers and if we will need to hit range balls.
-#- Listing of the menu for the evening meals. If this is your first time, keep the menu simple and make sure you have the recipes in hand. With any size group, you are going to have a chef or two and this won’t be a big deal.
-#- Multiple copies of the “order sheet” for sandwiches. For most of our noon meals between rounds, we dine on our self-prepared, gourmet sandwiches prepared the night before. As you saw from the previous articles, I solicit what the group wants and have that on the shopping list. What winds up being the least confusing way is to have some sheet for people to circle or fill in to specify what sandwiches they want for the next day. You rotate the preparers (two is best) every night and with that sheet, they manufacture the gourmet feast. (Don’t discount this! The sandwiches you make will be superior to anything short of the full meal at the course AND you will not have to wait on it if you are pressed for time between your rounds.)
-#- Biggy! We did not keep a record of our scores for our first few years. Big mistake. What great history we tossed out. Keep a record! I prepare a hard copy sheet to fill in as we go. It allows us to follow who is the overall stroke leader and gives us all ammo to use in negotiating the next day’s bets. I take this home and plant it permanently on our golf website.
-#- Expenses. I pay for everything with minor exceptions and collect everyone’s share the final evening. That keeps it simple. I currently use a spreadsheet to administer this. It works great. I would provide this for you, but this article format doesn’t allow. Before that, I simply used pen and paper and got it to within a penny. My point is that from the minute you start your adventure, keep a tally of what you have spent! Streamline course check in by paying for everyone, buy all the food and drink, buy all the gas, etc. If someone pays for anything, log it in immediately. If you are religious in this, you will have no complaints, only praise.
4. Things nobody else will bring but you:
- Several decks of cards, poker chips
- Cribbage boards
- Screw driver and pliers (you never know)
- Pens, pencils and permanent markers (you will need all)
- Over the counter pain killers
- Band-Aids
- Game
5. Arrival. So here you have a rambunctious group of friends descending on the Mecca of golf. You have motored to the house your staying in and it is the mad dash to the best room to be found. NOT. To avoid any hard feelings between the lodger that got the queen bed and the lodger that got the twin bed, simply set up a quick draw out of the hat. For subsequent years, do the same, but use the seniority system. Once a person misses, he goes to the end of the list.
6. Once you have dumped your bags in the drawn rooms, it is time to go shopping. With the template I gave you in the last article, and with your modifications based on menu and orders, grab one or two volunteers and get what you need.
This is the conclusion of my recommendations on how you can have the best golf outing or outings you have ever had. The fact that folks have been coming to enjoy my preparations for 19 years should be testimony to you. At least give it a shot once. The first time may not be exactly perfect, but my guess is that it will be superior to and more remembered than anything you can buy as a package. Go for it!
