What is a quick and easy, yet thoughtful gift you can give out during the holiday season? I know I work with a lot of people and to give each of them gifts can be expensive. In addition, I just dont know what everyone is into. The answer, for both keeping cost under control and taking into account taste is to give a food gift basket. A food gift basket can still be customized if you want to do that, but it will also keep your cost under control and allow you to stay sort of generic for those co workers you dont know as well.
When it comes to buying gifts or a little something for your co workers during the holidays, a food gift basket can be a life saver of sorts. To really make them cost effective, consider making the food gift baskets yourself even. Either buy or make an assortment of cookies, candies, and even instant cocoas or coffees. Once those are gathered, go to your local craft store and buy either baskets or canisters that you can easily decorate simply with ribbon or other holiday cheer. Then, just put the foods together in the baskets, decorate them and you are ready to hand out food gift baskets. Your other option is to head into a local specialty shop and check prices for pre-made food gift baskets. Its up to you and your budget which will work best.
If you do feel like you want to customize the food gift baskets you are giving out, you can certainly do that too. If you know the types of snacks of foods, or even the lifestyles of the people who will be getting the food gift baskets, then you can arrange it to meet those characteristics. For instance, coffee lovers can receive a gift basket full of coffees, mugs, and flavored creamers. If you know a health food nut, then think about filling a basket with granola and organic snacks. No matter what other things people may like, you can always get creative and put something together for each particular person. No matter who the person is or what he or she likes, you can always put together a food gift basket that will mean something to them.
Giving gifts around the office can get expensive and complex if you arent careful. You, however, may feel like you really enjoy your co-workers so that you want to give them something for the holiday season. A food gift basket can certainly be a great choice for those office gifts. You can customize them easily if you like and you can also save a lot of money. You can build them yourself to save extra money or even find a service that will make the baskets for you.

Have you noticed just how large the card section at your local grocery store has become? Did you know that there are entire businesses devoted to the selling of cards? One of the biggest occasions is someones birthday, and the sheer volume of available cards leaves many a would-be customer somewhat breathless in the attempt to score just the right card for the occasion. The gambit of birthday cards runs from the cute and funny, to the raunchy and oblique. Yet, have you ever wondered just where this custom originated?
It is said that birthday celebrations did not take place until people found ways of recording time. Obviously, this makes a lot of sense and if we consider that in those days Paganism was still the recognized religion of most, the fears of evil spirits dominated the thought and feelings of people. It was feared that spirits were on the attack and a person would be most vulnerable at the exact moment of the anniversary of their birth. Thus, elaborate rituals were conceived that sought to protect someone from an onslaught of negative energy. One of the most important components in the fight against this evil force was the counteraction with good energy, which caused friends and relatives to come out in droves and bring well wishes to the birthday celebrant. Wishes for happiness, a long life, health, prosperity, perhaps the finding of a spouse or birth of a child, and any other positive wish were thought to vanquish the evil spirits that lurked around the person on that date.
When you look at todays variety of birthday cards, you can easily discern that very little with respect to well wishes has changed. Each card contains a host of well wishes, some in a joking some in a religious vein, but always with happy thoughts and words of encouragement following. It is thought that England was the birthplace of the modern birthday card. Originally only the rich were able to afford to commission and purchase these elaborately manufactured cards, but very soon the idea caught on and almost everyone was able to afford to purchase cards. Other decided to make their own cards, which is a trend that is gaining new popularity these days with the advent of rubber stamps. Children love to make cards by hand, and their eagerness to apply stickers, draw hearts, and scribble their own well-wishes is superseded only by the recipients eagerness to receive these little treasures.

For the most part, people all over the world, Christians and non Christians, have pretty much stopped believing in miracles. There is too much pain and suffering going around to believe that someday the fighting and killing will stop. That would certainly be a miracle in itself, let alone on Christmas. But if you look hard enough, even at our own terrible history, you’ll see that there have been quite a few Christmas miracles. If you need some examples, keep reading.
A gentleman was scheduled to do the Christmas sermon for his church because the minister was on vacation that week. He had everything prepared. He went over his sermon with the minister the week before to get it approved and made all last minute corrections before he gave it. Then, that morning, he woke up, deathly ill. He couldn’t speak, his throat was so sore from the terrible cold he had. There was no way he was going to make it to church. The sermon wasn’t about to come off.
And then, the miracle happened. The man went into his study, got on his hands and knees and prayed to God to somehow give him the strength to make it to church and deliver the sermon. To make a long story short, within an hour, his throat cleared up enough to be able to deliver that sermon. Yes, he needed a glass of water at the pulpit and he didn’t sound as good as he could, but he did give that sermon. A Christmas miracle had indeed come his way.
But one of the greatest miracles of Christmas came on December 25, 1914. It was during the first world war. It was out in the trenches where the British army was worn and battered. They simply didn’t want to fight that day. They thought, wouldn’t it be something if we could get the German army, at the other end of the battlefield, in their own trenches, to agree to a cease fire, just for that day. Well, they put out the word. At first the Germans thought it was a trick. But it was no trick. The British soldiers laid down their rifles. Eventually the German soldiers did the same. The German generals were so worried about this that they ordered their men to attack, but they didn’t. For one day during the war in 1914, the fighting had stopped.
There are those who will claim that these things were no miracles. Certainly in comparison to turning stones into bread and water into wine and raising men from the dead, these do indeed fall far from what we would call a modern day miracle. But in a world where we can’t turn on the news without hearing about killings and muggings and war breaking out somewhere, it’s comforting to know that during one of the bloodiest wars in the history of our planet, two sides were able to put down their weapons for just one day and stop the fighting.
It may not be a miracle. But it will certainly never be forgotten.

Christmas brings a new life to the believers. Much before Christmas comes, the mood around the world changes. It is the anticipation of lovely days ahead of giving joy, meeting friends and family and feeling the spirit in the air that changes the most negative person to positive moods. Chistmas makes a person different. The same man, who you never see smiling, laughs during Christmas. That is the festive spirit of Christmas and that is why it is a lovely festival.
The most important part of Christmas is of course celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Another ritual of Christmas that makes it so special is giving. We send so many cards to friends and family that we lose the count. Similarly giving gifts is very important. Selecting the right gift for everyone, wrapping it lovingly and sending it across, all this is joyful. This joy cannot be described in words.
As I said earlier, it is the giving that is the major reason of happiness. If we look at our moods and behavior, we find that we always derive greater joy in giving compared to receiving. Can we not celebrate this spirit of giving everyday? Can we not get this joy everyday? Can we not make someone happy everyday? We can. With conscious effort, we can do one act a day that makes somebody genuinely happy. Why not carry the spirit of Christmas all the year and enjoy the happiness of giving. One is blessed when one gives. Let us get these blessings round the year.

Its birthday time for Dad, Uncle Mike, brother, boyfriend, teacher or any other significant male in your life. You must buy this special fellow a present, but what to give what to give?
Its fun to buy birthday gifts for boys and men. You must first think about whom it is you are buying for and what his likes and dislikes are. For example, if Dad loves to fish but isnt big on reading, a fishing pole would be ideal but a book just would not do. Younger men go for gadgets electronics seem to be the most popular choice. Most young boys love sports, so a football, baseball, soccer ball or tennis racket would be a great gift. For the eccentric guy in your life, how about a hot air balloon ride, or a day at the zoo feeding the tigers. Hed love to drive a Ferrari, so rent one for the weekend and take him away for a get away. Tickets to a sporting event for a sports buff are just the ticket or tickets to a Broadway play for a theater buff would fit the bill for sure.
Of course, if you dont have much time, the old standards will do. Men cant turn their noses up to a digital camera, mobile phone, MP3 player, electronic organizer, etc. Go to any mens department at the mall or shop online. Youll find a hundred gift ideas to choose from. If youre looking for a gift for a male friend or mentor, cufflinks, notebooks, wallets, business card holders, coffee mugs, clocks and calendars are always a tasteful gift.
The most important point to reiterate is when buying a gift for the man in your life, be sure to find out his likes and dislikes, and if hes someone really special seal your gift with a kiss.

With childhood obesity on the rise, kids really do not need additional calories from a bag full of candy. Chocolate candy bars, suckers, and gum are not only adding to our childrens waists, but also attributing to tooth and gum decay. With so many healthier options available, consider these alternatives to giving candy this Halloween.
Stickers All children love stickers! You can get boxes of 1000 stickers from local dollar stores and split them among hundreds of children. With many different styles, you can offer a wide variety of sticker designs to each child. You can buy 10 boxes of stickers for what you would buy an extra large bag of candy, so you can offer kids a whole strip with the cost of a candy bar!
Bagged snacks Most popular crackers, nuts, dried fruits and seeds come in individual serving bags. Cheese crackers with peanut butter filling and sealed bags of raisins are great alternatives to sugary offerings. With less sugar, less fat varieties, you can be giving children healthier snacks with much needed protein.
Coloring books or crayons You can buy these items in bulk at local stores and online for a very reasonable cost. When the school year begins, you can purchase 24 count crayon boxes for as low as $.10! If you go to dollar and discount stores, you can find whole packages of coloring and activity books for very little cost, as well. Offering these items will expand a childs imagination without expanding their waist.
Party favors or craft kits Several online companies offer bags of 100 party favors and craft kits for a very low price. Everything the child needs to play a game, make some noise, or create a craft is included! Many times you can find these items at craft stores and discount retailers, too.
Mini Books Paperback books can be cheap! Give the gift of reading this Halloween.
The amount of children you have knocking on your door will determine the above option you want to choose. However, any way you look at it, these ideas will give the kids more enjoyment than the few seconds they get from candy.

Creative Ideas For Kids Halloween Costumes Children usually anticipate Halloween for two reasons. The first is that they have a chance to dress up as their favorite characters. For some, the best holiday spot is at their own home and hearth. Thinking of holidays, like Christmas or Thanksgiving, brings to mind snow angels, scents of pine trees sparkling with glitter and lights, with family gathered to celebrate Yuletide traditions passed from generation to generation. With blended family units, and families tending to be spread far and near, more families, whether it is for large family celebrations, or small, intimate getaways, are spending holidays away from home, at holiday hot spots around the globe.
There are several vital considerations when planning the perfect holiday spot for your celebration. Do you live in an area where snow is an everyday event, leaving you with a yearning for a warm, sultry getaway filled with daytime lounges on sandy beaches, long walks beneath star filled skies, and the sound of the surf singing you to sleep each night, or do you long to spend a white Christmas away from home, bundling up, hitting the slopes, and then warming up with hot cocoa in front of a crackling fire?
The mountains of Colorado never fail to provide traditional white Christmas fans the perfect holiday spot. Rustic mountain cabins in places like Vermont also provide privacy, and all the amenities to enjoy the snow, scenery, and ski slopes. Places like Jamaica, Christmas Island, or a Caribbean get away, can make the cold, snowy weather at home seem an eternity away.
Whatever your decision, early planning is essential. Coordinate your plans with extended, or blended, family members, whether they are joining you at your chosen holiday spot, or plan to split the holidays to accommodate child visitation schedules, or other activities and celebrations. The best vacation dates and hottest holiday spots tend to be booked months in advance, so research by taking virtual tours, and consulting travel agents. Then choose the perfect holiday spot, and make all the arrangements early.

Well we are getting into the festive season now, and it seems that you have a love/hate relationship with it. However much we love it, everyone is concerned about the damage that will be done to their healthy living plans, especially with the sports facilities closed for such a long time. I have had so many requests to continue with my Christmas survival ideas, so this week; here is the low-down on Christmas dinner;
The original Christmas dinner has the potential to be a brilliant nutrition-packed meal, with its emphasis on low-fat turkey meat and lots of tasty vegetables. So why is it that the average Christmas dinner seems to contain almost an entire days calories? If you go for the turkey, roast potatoes, bacon, vegetables, pudding with brandy butter, and a couple of glasses of wine you are looking at around 1400 calories and 56.8g fat. Many people will bump it up to 2000 calories or more, with the addition of larger portions, seconds, sausages, more wine, and chocolates. So how can we turn this binge into a healthy feast?
Well, many of the essential ingredients of a Christmas dinner are bursting with nutrition;
The Good:
Turkey meat is rich in iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and B vitamins, and also contains an ingredient to boost the happy hormones in your brain. Turkey is naturally low in fat; the darker meat is slightly higher in fat, but also rich in iron. Remove the skin and consume half the amount of fat.
I think the second yummiest ingredient has got to be the roast potato. Potatoes are fabulous, providing us with energy, potassium, and vitamins B and C. If you want them to be healthier, then leave on the skins when you roast them to boost their vitamin and fiber content. Instead of drenching them in oil, invest in an olive-oil spray, and spray lightly before roasting. When you serve them up, dont go wild, exercise restraint. If you are super-virtuous, then have boiled spuds with olive oil and chopped chives, baked potato or roasted sweet potato- start a new tradition!
There is no forgetting the sprouts. These humble vegetables are bursting with goodness; powerful cancer-fighting ingredients, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Treat them kindly and steam them rather than boiling the poor things to death. If you feel like experimenting, then roast them for 30 -40 minutes in a little olive oil, give them a shake half way, and add some flaked almonds. Roasted sprouts are milder and sweeter - give them a go!
Make sure that all of your other vegetables are lightly steamed, this keeps in the wonderful beneficial nutrients, try; carrots, rich in antioxidants, green beans, peas, little sticks of swede, or make a cauliflower mash by steaming a head of cauliflower and mashing with some wholegrain mustard.
The Bad:
Streaky bacon, at 6g of fat and 90 calories per rasher (eek), wrap it around a sausage, and you are bumping up that cholesterol and fat even further. Why not leave out the bacon and sausage, or choose low-fat Quorn sausages instead of regular ones.
Mince pies and Christmas pudding are rich in minerals and some antioxidants because of the dried fruit content, but they are high in fat and sugar. Buy a small Christmas pudding so that everyone can have a nice portion, but it isnt hanging around afterwards for seconds and snacking. Just one mince pie and a slice of Christmas cake can add 460 calories and 18g of fat- ouch! Why not make apple pies with a little mincemeat added for a change. Make a big fruit salad and put it in the fridge, then everyone can snack on this in stead of picking away at pies and pudding.
The Ugly:
Well Brandy butter is basically sugar and butter with brandy added. It is packed with fat, refined sugar and cholesterol; thank goodness we only have it once a year. If you want to cut out some serious calories, you could have Christmas pudding with half-fat crme fraiche, which is a delicious addition to the sweet pudding, and so much healthier.
Why does everything about Christmas have to be so big? Filling the house with JUMBO bags of crisps and peanuts, biscuits and chocolates will not do anyone any favors. All are high in fat, sugar or salt; easy to eat, and bad for you. Get some bags of clementines, and dried fruit and nuts, you will be hard pushed to pig out on shelled nuts because it takes so long to get into them! Resist the urge to buy bumper packs of things which will linger in the cupboard waiting to be munched.
Sitting down in front of the TV after your lunch is the worst thing that you can do. If you want to beat the bulge and the bloating, then get the whole family out for some fresh air. A good walk will banish that post-dinner lethargy and stop the Christmas pudding from settling on your thighs.
Well I hope that this has given you some hope; there are so many good healthy foods around at this time of year, so place the emphasis on these, and resist the Bullying supermarkets attempts to make you buy enormous packets of Pringles and barrels of salted nuts. Eat, drink and be merry, but eat and drink the right things, and you will be feeling much more merry by January!
Until next time, take care and stay healthy!

The winter holidays bring a multitude of dietary challenges for any health conscious individual. For the weight loss surgery patient (WLS), who must avoid sugar intake, the season can be frustrating. Sugar intake is a real concern for people whove had gastric bypass, in fact most patients fear sugar. The foremost fear isnt weight gain, its dumping. Foods containing sugar pass too quickly through the small pouch, they are rapidly absorbed and cause insulin levels to drop resulting in dumping syndrome.
Some WLS patients will turn to sugar-free candies to replace to old traditional sugar laden favorites. But the sugar-free candy comes with a price too. It contains sugar alcohol which is known to cause gas, bloating and diarrhea. In addition the candy can be consumed slowly in large quantity and often results in severe discomfort for the WLS patient. Patients who have consumed excessive quantities of sugar-alcohol products report an initial dull tummy ache. The tummy ache soon becomes severe bloating, cramping and gas. One woman reported pain so severe she begged to be taken to the hospital fearing she may soon explode.
There is not much to do in the case of excessive consumption of sugar-free products except wait-out the uncomfortable symptoms. Some patients report relief after taking an anti-diarrheal products containing bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol). Other patients have found relief from eating saltine crackers in moderation.
Candy that contains Mannitol, a common sugar alcohol extracted from seaweed, bears this package warning, Warning: excessive consumption can cause a laxative effect Mannitol is found naturally in pineapples, olives, asparagus, sweet potatoes and carrots. Its about 60% as sweet as sugar, so more product is needed to replicate the sweetness of sugar. Mannitol lingers in the intestines for a long time and therefore causes bloating and diarrhea.
Sugar alcohol can also be called Sorbitol, Xylitol, Lactitol, Isomalt and Maltitol.
The American Diabetes Association claims that sugar alcohols are acceptable in a moderate amount but should not be eaten in excess. In addition, weight gain has been seen when these products are overeaten. For gastric bypass patients generally the key, as in all eating, must be moderation. And of course, we can always rely on the old advice of conventional dieters, Hungry for something sweet? Reach for a piece of fruit.

Christmas is not only the season to be jolly but also the best time to share and give. Gift giving has always been associated with Christmas. Just imagine how dull Christmas will be without gifts. For sure, you would not like the sight of your Christmas tree without any gifts underneath it.
If you have trouble picking the right Christmas gifts for your loved ones, you dont have to worry because you are not alone in this. Most people also experience difficulty finding the right gifts not because they do not have the money to purchase expensive ones but because they want to see to it that the gifts they give please the recipients.
So, before you begin Christmas shopping, first you have to make the list of people to whom you will give a gift. The list can include your mother, father, spouse, children, brother, sister, and also your closest friends. After listing down their names, you have to think about the interests and hobbies of each person so you have a slight idea about what to give them. For example, if your mom loves baking, perhaps you can buy her a new set of baking pans. If your child loves to play with dolls, then you can consider looking for a nice walking and talking doll.
Aside from the ready-to-buy Christmas gifts that you can get, you can also exert some effort and use your skills to craft self-made gifts that your loved ones will surely be glad to receive. Some of the simple things that you can do are wooden framed cross-stitch pictures, scented candles or soaps, handmade bags, and baked cookies and goodies. These are not only very affordable but since you exerted effort to make them, they will be more appreciated than those ready-to-buy gifts.
Christmas indeed would never be complete without gift giving. However, you should always remember that the true essence of this season is still the birth of Jesus Christ in the manger, which is the most wonderful gift of all time.
