Being a performer is not as easy as it looks. You are not just a child playing around on stage. There is much to think about when it comes to being a good performer. One of the more important things to consider is what your audience sees. Making sure that you have created a set that is appealing to the eye and believable will draw your audience in. Making sure that the audience can see what is going on is vital, since that is what the performance is all about. Finally, ensuring that you have thought out the costumes will ensure that you are relaying the message that you desire your audience to receive from your performance.
The set is what allows your audience to see where they are being transported to. Is it a train station near the city in the early 1900s or New York City in the year 2000? Are you taking your audience to the classrooms in a rural community or to the inner city? Your set will play a vital role in what your audience will take in from your performance. Making sure that you do a professional job on the paint and design of the set will make it visually stimulating. Making sure that you build it in a way that will make set changes a breeze is very important to the flow of your production.
Ensuring that your audience can see all that is taking place during the show allows them to make predictions about what is going to happen next. It will allow them to relate the events and places to experiences they have had as individuals. Allowing your audience to see all that is unfolding is important for your audience, so that they may see the expressions of the actors and actresses and to hear the performers clearly.
Costumes are a key component to a production gone well. It is important to think about the time period, to research the type of clothing they wore, the colors they wore, how they wore their clothing. The costumes are going to be what makes the show authentic to your viewers. Wearing clothing that does not match the time period or circumstance the character is in will discredit what is taking place and cause the viewer to be more focused on the improper dress than what is being said and done on stage. The costume allows the audience member, like the set, to be transported to a different place and time and to be drawn into what is going on.
Appearance is vital when acting. You may even want to video tape your practices or perform them in front of a mirror to ensure that your audience will have the most positive and authentic experience possible.

In the Fall of 1961, CBS first aired The Dick Van Dyke Show, one of funniest sitcoms in television history. Similar to I Love Lucy, but featuring more docile and less eccentric characters, the show became a mainstay in the top 10 Nielsen ratings for its first four seasons. When the show’s ratings slipped in the fifth season, the network cancelled the show. But in the four decades since, The Dick Van Dyke Show has continued to entertain its fans and their children (and their children’s children) via syndicated re-runs
The Dick Van Dyke Show is centered around the life of Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke), a family man living in suburban New York. As the head writer for the fictional “Alan Brady Show,” he works with co-writers Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam) and Sally Rogers (Rose Marie). Rob’s work life is always interesting given Buddy’s constant wisecracks, Sally’s never-ending search for a husband, and the trio’s unified harassment of Alan Brady’s brother-in-law, Mel Cooley (Richard Deacon). At home, Rob’s loving yet overly-nervous wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) stays at home with the couple’s son Ritchie (Larry Mathews). Surrounded by all these unique characters, Rob is always embroiled in someone’s scheme, fantasy, or shenanigan
The Dick Van Dyke Show (Season 4) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere “My Two Show-Offs and Me” in which Rob, Buddy, and Sally are interviewed as part of a magazine article on the “Alan Brady Show” Other notable episodes from Season 4 include “Four and a Half” in which Rob tells the story of how he and Laura met Lyle Delp (played by Don Rickles), and “The Impractical Joke” in which Buddy thinks that an IRS visit is part of a practical joke by Rob

Nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture, Apollo 13 is one of the best movies of its decade. Despite prior knowledge of the historical outcome, it’s guaranteed to keep viewers steeped in suspense. Director Ron Howard creates yet another fantastic picture, solidifying his transformation from Mayberry’s favorite son on Andy Griffith to one of the most accomplished director/producers in all of Hollywood. Standout performances by Gary Sinise and Tom Hanks (on the heels of their Oscar-caliber portrayals from Forrest Gump) make Apollo 13 especially enticing to the movie connoisseur. Based on the true story of the Apollo 13 mission, the film stirs emotions of all types - hope, fear, and patriotism among them. In the end, it’s one of those rare movies where the characters are able to intimately connect with the audience. In short, Apollo 13 provides a true glimpse into the lives of those who defined history
Tom Hanks plays the role of real life astronaut Jim Lovell, member of the three man crew of Apollo 13 - the 1970 lunar landing mission. Accompanied by fellow crewmates Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon), Lovell rockets into space in pursuit of his dream of walking on the moon. Unable to make the flight, fellow astronaut Ken Mattingly (Gary Sinise) reluctantly remains on the ground.
Meanwhile, Americans show little interest in this latest lunar mission despite the fact that barely a year has passed since Neil Armstrong’s famous words. Apollo 13 is perceived as “routine” and the flight gets little press coverage until Lovell utters some famous words of his own, “Houston, we have a problem”
When things go horribly wrong on Apollo 13, the mission changes from one of moon landing to astronaut survival. Lovell, Haise, and Swigert feverishly work to uncover the problem. Meanwhile, in Houston, flight director Gene Kranz (Ed Harris), bumped crew member Ken Mattingly, and the legions of NASA ground control work around the clock to maintain contact and bring the astronauts home safely. As the minutes pass, the entire world holds its breath in anticipation of the outcome
Following on the coattails of Tom Hanks back-to-back Academy Awards for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump - Apollo 13 hit the movie theaters with widespread anticipation. The monumental expectations of movie goers were not without merit as the film’s multiple Academy Award nominations will attest. But what makes Apollo 13 such a strong and emotion-driven epic is its connection with the historical record. The events that unfold happened for real, and at the time, no one knew the final outcome. Unlike today, traveling to space was not routine (or at least not as overlooked as it is now). The men who flew the Apollo 13 mission were true heroes in every sense of the word.
And although they failed to reach the moon, the astronauts of Apollo 13 are immortalized in history in ways they never would have been had their flight gone off without a hitch. Tom Hanks, Ron Howard, and their colleagues do justice to this classic story of man’s triumph over adversity. Compelling, suspenseful, and filled with drama, Apollo 13 is an unforgettable film - and a definite must-see movie

We have just spent the like six years or so in the midst of a reality TV craze. It seems like every show that came out was a reality show. While I am glad they seem to be dying down finally there is one kind of show I wish I got to see, Corporate Reality TV. Am I the only one that would have been interested in this type of show?
It is clear this could never happen because no company would ever agree to allow themselves to be put on national TV. Not only would their competition look for important information they typically dig through dumpsters to find (dont laugh, it happens) but we would also get to see just how ridiculous corporate America really is.
I happen to be in management for a large international insurance company. I am confident that the majority of companies out there operate in a very similar way to my company. I am a front-line manager so I am still the one listening to the orders. Upper management holds meetings and conference calls constantly. They always ask us to spend more time with our people when they end the fourth conference call of the day.
I have been in my current position for approximately eighteen months. I do not recall being on one conference call that was of any value. I know for a fact that these conference calls are not effective because I spend the majority of the call emailing my peers who are also venting to how useless the call is.
If you really look around your place of employment you can see just how many things would be comical to a viewer from the outside. A recent example that comes to mind has to do with the newest push to encourage diversity. I do not think this is a joke if it is handled properly, especially my company that is 80% white people. We just passed Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. My company, who has never celebrated it before to the best of my knowledge, suddenly required every office to have a contest on who could have the best MLK Day celebration. We were asked to take pictures and submit them to upper management to pick the winner for the contest. Here is the best part, they would not reveal who the winner was to anyone but the winning office, and they did not reveal the prize. These are the types of things I think would be extremely enjoyable to watch on TV. Whose brilliant idea was this whole thing? If it is that important, why wouldnt you publicly honor the winning office rather than keeping it a secret? My guess is that they really had no intention of picking a winner or offering a prize. I think they just said that to get people to do something for this holiday now that diversity it the hot topic.
Sometimes I would also like to see just how the butt-kissing chain works from an outsiders view as well. How does anything get done when all people do is kiss their supervisors butt? I am not and will not ever be a butt-kisser and this clearly has an affect on my career.
There are so many dynamics that exist in the workplace. Rather than watching some has-been celebrities trying to learn to ice skate maybe Fox can pull off this idea and we can get some real entertainment on the boob tube.

Winner of the Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design award, The Terminal is a fascinating and humorous romantic comedy based on a novel premise. Directed by Steven Spielberg, who previously collaborated with Tom Hanks on The Money Pit (1986), Joe Versus The Volcano (1990), and Saving Private Ryan (1998), the films eccentricity tends to transform an otherwise lackluster film into an endearingly comedic one. The product of veteran screenwriters Sacha Gervasi and Andrew Niccol, the latter being credited with the smash hit The Truman Show (1998), The Terminal isnt quite on par with the aforementioned Jim Carey film, but neither is it a waste of time. Sporting an out-of-the-ordinary plot and a strange array of characters, its a film youre certain to either love or hate
The Terminal follows the life of Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks), a citizen of the fictional Republic of Krakozhia, who decides to vacation in New York City. Stepping off his plane and onto the terminal at JFK International, he remains unaware of the civil war that erupted in Krakozhia during his flight, a war resulting in the dissolution of the Republic and Viktors status as an official citizen of nowhere. Because the United States has yet to establish a working relationship with the newly created nation, Viktor can not leave the terminal. Neither can he return to Krakozhia, nor can he set foot on US soil outside the boundaries of terminal.
Following the explanation of this snafu by the head of terminal security Frank Dixon (Stanley Tucci), Viktor slowly, despite the language barrier, realizes the implications of the war. Dixons first inclination is to convince Viktor he can make a run for it when the security detail changes shifts, when in reality, he plans to have Viktor arrested so hes no longer a problem. But Viktor doesnt bite. Instead, he makes a decision to stay in the terminal. The result is a hilarious and sometimes inspiring cacophony of events that force Viktor to uncover his own means of survival.
Running out of food coupons, Viktor returns luggage carts and collects the deposits so he can buy cheeseburgers at Burger King. But Dixon stops him by declaring that only security officials can gather carts. As the days pass, Dixon continues to obstruct Viktors efforts. He makes friends with many of the airport personnel, builds his own dwelling, and acquires an undocumented job working as a carpenter inside the airport. Along the way, he also strikes up a sporadic romance with airline stewardess Amelia Warren (Catherine Zeta-Jones).
When Dixon is promoted to the top position at JFK, Viktor spoils his plans with some creative interpretation on behalf of a foreign passenger detained with illegal prescription drugs. Telling Dixon the drugs are for the mans goat, rather than his father, he is able to grant the man passage much to Dixons dismay. In the end, Viktor reaches celebrity status among the employees and regulars of the airport terminal. But will Viktor ever escape the vagabond life of living in an airport terminal?
A fascinating what if concept, The Terminal may be an implausible scenario, but its nevertheless an entertaining one. Tom Hanks does a superb job in moving Viktors character from a man who barely speaks English to a man who is fully functional in a foreign airport terminal. Not to be confused with one of the great films of its time, movie buffs could still do far worse than to spend a relaxing evening watching this one. The talent of Tom Hanks is on full display, and Steven Spielberg rarely produces a flop

One of the defining movies of the 80’s decade, The Breakfast Club remains an entertaining film which evokes nostalgia among many viewers. Inevitably, any foray into the cinema blockbusters of the 1980s will evoke a number of titles, such as Back To The Future, Beverly Hills Cop, or The Goonies. The Breakfast Club is certainly one of those films, and it’s almost universally cited as one of the preeminent films from the era. If you enjoy relationship films, it’s easy to see why, because The Breakfast Club is a movie built solely on the strength of its characters and the conflict surrounding them
Shermer High School principal Richard Vernon (Paul Gleason) oversees the Saturday morning detention of five high school students from differing backgrounds. Confining them to the library, he fails to relate to them as individuals with a future or a purpose. Making up the cast of misfit characters are Andy Clark (Emilio Estevez), Brian Ralph Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall), John Bender (Judd Nelson), Claire Standish (Molly Ringwold), and Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy). Forced to spend their Saturday together, the five students strike up a conversation (with the exception of the muted Allison). For the most part, their conversation consists of picking on each other and making jokes at each other’s expense.
Continually butting heads with Principal Vernon, the teens help pass the time by uniting against Vernon and by engaging in conversation with the infinitely wise janitor, Carl (John Kapelos). Eventually, each student (including Allison, who eventually opens up) comes to understand the plight of the other. The pretty princess Claire doesn’t have a perfect life. Neither does the popular wrestling champ Andy. Brian and Allison have their own problems just like anyone else, and John puts up a front to look tougher and more hardened than he really is. In the end, the five develop a lifelong bond - with Claire and John igniting a budding relationship
Sporting a smash hit soundtrack headlined by Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” The Breakfast Club attained instant cult classic status. The ‘brat pack’ came to define a generation and made its mark in Hollywood. A light-hearted comedy, blended together with a series of relationships between different people, The Breakfast Club’s true strength lies with the ability of its audience to relate to the issues at hand. The characters recount stories from their lives that in one way or another are easily relatable to most every American who attended high school.
It’s this universal familiarity with the themes depicted by The Breakfast Club that make it a classic adored by millions. Despite the longings of teenagers throughout time to forge unique identities and set themselves aside as revolutionary, in the end, most high schools sport the same cast of characters, and those various roles have remained unchanged for most of the last several decades. As one of the most memorable films of the 80’s decade, The Breakfast Club is a definite must-see movie

The #1 Nielsen rated program from 1971 to 1976, All In The Family is quite simply one of the greatest television programs in history. Inspired by The Honeymooners and The Flintstones, All In The Family features its own loud-mouthed, opinionated blowhard sporting a hidden soft and sensitive side. Like Ralph Kramden and Fred Flintstone, Archie Bunker fulfills his role to absolute perfection, and the result is TV magic. Well-written and outright hilarious, All In The Family broke ground in the 70’s with its willingness to tackle all the social issues and societal taboos of its day. Topics included racism, bigotry, sexism, homosexuality, death, and other namby-pam, socialist and liberal-feminist ideals (or at least that’s how Archie would put it!) A titan among television sitcoms, All In The Family spawned a pair of shows which topped the ratings in their own right - Maude and The Jeffersons
The All In The Family (Season 4) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere “We’re Having a Heat Wave” in which Archie and Henry Jefferson (both for different reasons) try to prevent the Lorenzos, a Hispanic family, from moving into the house next door which just went up for sale Other notable episodes from Season 4 include “Archie and the Kiss” in which Gloria brings home a Rodin-inspired centerpiece much to Archie’s chagrin, and “Edith’s Conversation” in which Archie fears that Irene Lorenzo is attempting to convert Edith to Catholicism

The makers of Knocked Up bring you another romantic comedy. Katherine Heigl stars alongside James Marsden as a morbid exploited personal assistant. The story focuses on Jane (Katherine Heigl) who has been a bridesmaid at 27 different weddings without ever being the bride. The one person she does actually love is her charming boss. When she finally plucks up the courage to show her feelings, her sister Tess, swoops in and before she knows it is getting married to the man of her dreams. Meanwhile, Malcolm Doyle played by James Marsden is a columnist who keeps following Jane around desperately trying to get a date while writing stories on her and Tess’ marriage. It all gets very complicated and I will say no more because otherwise I will spoil 27 Dresses for you.
For me, the film is very slow to start. I was not sure what the purpose was of large sections of the beginning, because it was simply boring and unnecessary. While it is important to set the scene there is just too much setting of the scene and not enough action. 27 Dresses only really got interesting in the last 30 minutes when things actually start to go wrong. In terms of a plot concept it was ok and could have made a decent romantic comedy. However, the script is at times poor making the plot laboured and overly long. Some of the scenes appear to be filler scenes rather than actually contributing to the plot. 27 Dresses should have been around 90 minutes long rather than 107 minutes. Moreover, any supposed twists are predictable and are so obvious it is painful.
The acting is ok and James Marsden and Katherine Heigl both give creditable performances but they are let down by the poor plot. The chemistry between the two is convincing and good but there is not enough to keep the audience interested during the endless periods of nothingness that make up the bulk of this film. One of Jane’s friends made me laugh more with her few lines than the rest of the cast combined. I am not going to spoil the plot but at one part of the film when the sister is angry with Jane she is suddenly calm again within about 30 seconds, that made me laugh.
The film was simply too morbid and dull. I know I am a guy so it is in my make up not to enjoy romantic comedies but compared to others I have seen this one is poor. Unfortunately, the plot of 27 Dresses never fully develops beyond the fact that she has been bridesmaid 27 times, her sister is marrying the man of her dreams and another man is madly in love with her. I actually found myself physically annoyed at Jane. It is unusual in a romantic comedy for the leading woman to be annoying but she is! No woman in the world is more of a walk over than her.
Ultimately, 27 Dresses was a disappointment. Not enough happened in the film to warrant its length. I think Katherine Heigl should try to make sure she only appears in romantic comedies that are actually funny in the future and James Marsden I do not know, because he has been killed in X-Men and returned to a fantasy world in Enchanted. Anyway, I would not recommend seeing this film even if you are into films of this genre. If you really want to see it I would wait till you can rent it on DVD rather than wasting your money on a cinema ticket.
