Even though Disney has produced myriad movies, it is more popular for its animated ones. After starting the animated journey with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in the winter of 1937, Disney movies have not looked back. One can obtain a list of more than 150 animated Disney movies that have been produced and distributed to add to the joy of children across the world.
After a certain age, kids grow out of Sesame Street, Tellytubbies and BooBaahs. At this time the next level of entertainment that attracts them generally are the Disney movies that appeal to a slightly older age group. The great thing about these movies, which has probably led to the huge popularity of the Disney movies, is the fact that they appeal to adults and children alike. A mother does not mind sitting through a Disney movie with her child but an episode of Tellytubbies can be wearisome.
To the uninitiated, it may be a surprise that each Disney movie comes accompanied with a Disney movie book. These books are published under the ‘Mouse Works’ banner and contain a simple version of the story. This can help in encouraging children to not only see the Disney movies but also to read books, which hopefully will extend to other forms of reading at some time.
Though the company is proud of all its Disney movie productions, some of them have attained the stature of ‘classics’ based on their popularity. Abound with simple, yet meaningful songs these Disney movies can expose the child to emotions, morals and ways of the world while telling a story. Toddlers seem to enjoy the light evilness of some of the characters like the witch in Snow White and Cruella De Vil in the 101 Dalmations. Alternately, some of the most endearing characters that Disney movies have created are Tramp in The Lady and the Tramp and the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. But most of the leading characters in Disney movies inspire awe and amazement aided by the color, grandeur and dazzle.
Some of the Disney movies that have become all time favorites of most kids are The Lion King, Toy Story, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, The little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp, Cinderella and of course Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Some of the less known but equally enticing Disney movies are the sequels to the Lion King, Dumbo, Lilo and Stitch, Pooh and Kim Possible series.
In spite of the high levels of endearment that the Disney movies enjoy among most people, there are rumors galore about how there are countless hidden references to perverted things in the animated movies. The most known references are made to the tower on the cover of The Little Mermaid that resembles the male genitalia, the apparent erection of the priest in the wedding scene of the same movie and the dust taking the form of the word ’sex’ in The Lion King. Hearsay has it that Donald Duck has used vulgar words umpteen times during angry outbreaks. Some opine that these subtle references have become a tradition at the Disney studios.
This tradition started due to the fact that Walt Disney did not assign relevant credits to the creative animators. These animators, then, took to including hidden codes in the animation scenes to get back. One such example is that of the shorts that Goofy wears. If you look close enough, you will probably see names of artists written on these shorts. Though the given instance seems possible, the inclusion of debauchery in the animated Disney movies is debatable and it remains a question as to whether it is a fact or the Rorschach effect.

When I was a child and then a teenager, in the 60s and 70s, the only new television programs airing in the U.S. were on ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS. Therefore there were relatively few television shows to watch. We also did not have computers and video games back then so I imagine that a larger percent of time was spent watching TV. My point is that because so many people were watching so few shows, the people in this age group (the younger half of the baby boom) have a shared nostalgia of television shows of their youth.
I worry that our teens will not experience this when they are our age. Ever since Fox became the fourth network, more and more channels have been adding new programming to their lineup. The viewing audience today is so fragmented that most people have not even heard of many of the television shows currently on the air.
Baby boomers can sit around and reminisce about Bewitched, Gilligan’s Island, Happy Days and Three’s Company, whether they were fans or not. Everybody knew about every show and had probably seen them all a few times even if they did not like them. It is almost impossible to keep up with every show that comes on now. It is hard enough to even remember what number channel each station is on.
American Idol is currently one of the few television shows that have high enough ratings and buzz that it is sure to be part of our teens shared memories in the future. But even its ratings are lower than most average shows were years ago. I really do not know if there will be too many shows that they will all remember. Who knows, this might lead to a form of making friends. Two current teens meet thirty years from now and if they remember the same television shows they become great friends; if not, they go their separate ways.

Movie Studios Really Screwed Up With The Baby Boomer Market The QuestionEver since I wrote the post 10 movies to Recommend to your teens from before they were born, I have been thinking about the scarcity of movies made for the teen audience before the mid 1970s. “When a dog bites a man, it’s no news, but when a man bites a dog its news.”
In Bollywood, whosoever bites is breaking news. Be it Rakhi Sawant’s tantrums on Valentines Day or April fools day, a tattoo on either Amrita Arora’s butt or Saif Ali Khan’s hand, Mallika Sherawat’s short, revealing dresses or Aishwarya Jodha Rai’s royal jewelry, news channels and page 3 sections of newspapers have devoted majority of there manpower, time and space to Bollywood gossips.
I have grown up reading Hindi newspapers like Amar Ujala, Dainik Jagran and Rajasthan Patrika. There were days, when I used to fight for reading Sunday’s colored edition of these regional newspapers. Out of four pages i.e. one whole leaf of the newspaper, only one-fourth was devoted to such gossips and rest three-fourth was for intellectual or socio-spiritual articles, short stories and series by budding or established writers, poetries, and kids’ section including Chacha Chaudhary cartoon series, jokes, puzzles and many more games. It was enough entertainment for my innocent mind. It was the same for TV Channels or Channel rather. Wednesday’s and Friday’s Chitrahar and the Sunday evening movie was all we used to know of Bollywood. Yes, there were Filmfare and Filmikaliyan as well but DD provided us with a lot to talk for the whole week.
That’s where present day news channels and papers are capitalizing. We strive to know about the insights of celebrities’ personal lives. We want to be like them and to an extent follow them, sometimes blindly. Now we don’t talk, we don’t share our thoughts and emotions; there is no vent for our urge to express. It is just one-way traffic. We have become a garbage for all the reporting rubbish. We are just listening. It’s a good habit, no doubt, but what about expression? But when we hear 24×7, silly news on Amitabh Bhachan’s superstitious ritual of marrying Aishwarya Rai with a Banyan tree in order to save his son from her Manglik effect, it’s too much to digest.
India is a country which still is in its nascent stage of development. It’s a transition period and too much is happening too fast. There is Kalahandi here and Colaba as well. These places differ like light and darkness. India can afford this but Bharat can’t. Bharat still needs krishi darshan, fauji bhaiyon ke liye, Iodine namak, school chalien hum and jachha-baccha tika-karan karykram. We need to improve the living conditions of more than half of our population and to this mass, Bollywood is nowhere, even in their distant dreams. They want an average quality life and Bollywood gossips are of no good to them.
The media has to understand its social responsibilities- there is much more than sting operations and Bollywood. There are many channels totally devoted to Bollywood news. So the so-called news channels must stick to the hardcore news. The current trend is an insult to journalism and reporting. Stop this!
Bollywood Movies - Going Against The Wind! Bollywood Cinemas came in India on July 7 1896, when at the Watkins Hotel in downtown Bombay, the short films of the Lumire brothers were shown. Movie Mama Rating: 1 out of 5
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Dakota Blue Richards, Green, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, Ian McShane
Directed By: Chris Weitz
Running Time: 1 hr. 58 min.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for sequences of fantasy violence.
Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) is a twelve year old orphan who lives in a world parallel to our own. It is a world where souls walk beside humans in the form of animals, where giant, talking polar bears are the fiercest of warriors, where witches fly through the sky and proclaim prophecies, where an authority called the Magisterium reigns supreme, and where a group called Goblers are kidnapping children left and right. When two of Lyra’s friends are taken captive, she embarks on an adventure to rescue them. Equipped with a golden compass that only she can read, Lyra stumbles into an epic battle that stretches across the entire universe.
I hope that Philip Pullman’s acclaimed novels hold a reader’s attention far better than this film adaptation held mine. Never once have I, no matter how terrible the film, thought about walking out of a movie theater but I genuinely wanted this film to be over after the first thirty minutes. Besides a dazzling wardrobe and captivating CGI animals, there was nothing else to applaud. For me, a fantasy world should be one that a child would want to step into, explore, and see for themselves. This bleak, cold, depressing, and terrible land Pullman has painted makes me appreciate the world I live in. Perhaps that was his intent–to make us appreciate what we have here on earth. If so, he succeeds. But then again, he succeeds in fueling the demise of imagination. As a film critic, I found Chris Weitz’s adaptation to be vague, sloppy, and downright frightening. There were so many borrowed elements that made this film unimaginative, from the green fire we saw in Harry Potter, to the battle sequences we saw in The Chronicles of Narnia, to even casting Lord of the Rings actors like Christopher Lee and Ian McKellen. Parents, I’m begging you, don’t waste your money on this one. It’s a flop!
PROS
The Magisterium is a facist organization that will stop at nothing, not even brainwashing and torture, to hold onto its power. The underlying drive of Lyra, her friends, and her allies is to resist this tyranny and fight for freedom.
Lyra promises her best friend that if he is taken by the Goblers that she will come find him. She ultimately keeps her word.
There are several instances where characters demonstrate bravery: Lyra saves Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) from drinking wine that has been poisoned; Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman) saves Lyra from torture; and the gyspy-like “Gyptians” save Lyra from being captured by the Magisterium.
CONS
Lyra is far from a child role model. She is a habitual liar (ironic since her golden compass is a truth-telling device) who despises all authority figures, deplores the idea of becoming a lady, eavesdrops on purpose, and doesn’t seem to exibit any light or goodness of spirit. Her character is so ridiculously abrasive that if not for the PG-13 rating, Weitz would have her cursing like a sailor.
The souls that walk beside their humans in animal forms are called dmons (pronounced demons). This might be offensive to some parents and children–I know that for me, it was unsettling to look at a cute, cuddly ferret on screen and hear him referred to as a demon.
The fact that Pullman calls the evil, reigning authority the ‘Magisterium,’ (one of the bad guys is also a friar) might offend some of the Catholic faith, especially since Pullman is very outspoken about his anti-Catholic prejudices.
There is not one good, righteous, shining light, or ray of hope to be found in this movie. I found all of the children and adults to be petty, rude, and cruel. If Lyra is supposed to be what is good, then Pullman and Weitz need some lessons in goodness.
There are some truly terrifying battle sequences throughout the entire film. Some of these include a horrific, torture scene where Lyra is getting her dmon “cut off,” and during an intense battle between two polar bears, the winning bear rips the jaw off of the losing bear and breaks his neck. It’s rather gruesome.
One of the witches speaks about her ex-lover. Kidnapped children are taken to a school to be brainwashed and have their dmons “cut off.”
OVERALL
The Golden Compass left me confused and irritated. Even though the film is centered around a twelve year old protagonist, they’ve made it so graphic that twelve year olds will not be able to go see it due to the PG-13 rating. And any parent silly enough to accompany their younger children to the theater will yawn of boredom repeatedly.

Pretty Ugly People is a comedy with heart. Starring Missy Pyle as Lucy, the film is about a woman who having suffered from being the “heavy” friend in college, reunites with her old buddies for a long weekend. After glamorizing her friends for years, she is in for a surprise when she discovers that they all have their less than joyful moments. Melissa McCarthy (Gilmore Girls, Pumpkin, etc) is the caring friend that rounds up the less supportive crew who are too busy in their own lives to want to have to take time out for Lucy.
The premise of the film rests on this idea that Lucy, having never asked any of them for anything before, needs them “before her time is up.” An ambiguous phone call with McCarthy’s character, Becky, leads her to assume that Lucy is dying and they must go no matter what. I won’t give away whether she is or not, but let’s just say, the crew is not so happy when they arrive and Lucy has plans for them to go on a 4 day hike through the wilderness.
The plot is fairly simple and the reunion type film has been done many times before (The Big Chill, etc), yet the film remains fresh with some great comedy from the ensemble cast. Still, the film has a good message and doesn’t just make fun of the heavy girl, but actually shows that we all have our hang ups, whether it is our looks, or sexual identity, our race, our position in society. Due to some pretty strong direction from Taylor, the film never gets heavy handed even though it takes on some pretty tough subjects.
As much as I loved the film, I had some trouble with the beginning and end. The middle of the film, when they are in the wilderness is just perfect. Some great acting that is shot in a beautiful location in the hills of Montana is all you need. But the original premise of their friendship was stretched a bit thin as rather than open with flash back scenes of their college time, the director made an interesting decision to begin with animation. Not to say I didn’t like the animation, as it was done very well, with some great edits into the real characters (I compare it to the John Cusack Better off Dead animation scenes but with more flair). But, since the characters are bitchy and not real happy to support her in the beginning, it doesn’t help that they remain bitchy and not real happy to support her throughout. Why is she surprised by this? Why are these people her friends? Oh because, we all have those college friends, don’t we? The ones that you promise to remain in touch forever but as your lives go down separate paths, it gets harder and harder to remember to reach out. In fact, one of the lines in the film hits the nail on the head about the most obnoxious character, “We all have our George’s don’t we?”
And we do. You can connect with this movie, because we all have those friends throughout life that we can be ourselves around even when we are our less than perfect selves. Those are the friends that, maybe it takes a while to get reacquainted, but once you do it is like you are right back in the moment that bonded you in the first place. And yet the beginning does work in the context of the film to help you understand that her idealized version of her college friends and who they are today maybe are not so different, it is she that is waking up.
And then the end happens. A complete curveball that maybe was a little too over the top but definitely a strong plot point in order to create a change in these characters. The ending is not the worst I have seen, but I did find it slightly out of place for the rhythm of the story.
However, the very end makes up for it with the scene stealing Allison Janney. A must see if for no other reason than her hysterical bit. Although, I highly recommend that once this film gets out on the festival circuit, try to find a way to see it. One of my favorites at a fest so far this year.

“I Am Legend” is a fantastic horror movie and is an adapted version of Richard Matheson’s science fiction novel. The fictional concept in this novel was also appreciated all over the world.
In the movie the main protagonist Wills Smith lives in fear and loneliness for around three years. The main spiritual theme in this movie is the struggle between ‘Light’ and ‘Dark’. It means the fight between God and devil. Usually ‘light’ signifies goodness, purity and resolution whereas, the ‘dark’ signifies evil, misery and disaster. This movie develops a plot where, only two kinds of people are left in the earth: the light dwellers and the dark dwellers. Almost all the people have perished but Will Smith, the main character is the only light dweller left on this earth. Those who have perished have transformed into crazed zombies. These crazed zombies appear only during the night, as during the day time the sunlight kills and destroys them.
The movie ‘I Am Legend’ begins brilliantly. The main character initially defends God’s existence, explaining that people suffer because of their own evil deeds. But later, when he endures some years of solitude and fear of surviving in a civilization that is devoid of civilized people, he resists his own conviction. However towards the conclusion of the film, a beautiful Cuban woman appears to save his life. She reveals that God guided her to discover him. She explains that if we believe and trust in God, the Almighty would surely help us. But to pour out his frustration, Smith screams back to the woman that such a supernatural being is no where. Prior to the end of the film, Smith understands his misconceptions and repents. The film extraordinarily dramatizes the restoration of faith in Will’s heart. In order to repent and show his faith in God he sacrifices himself to help the woman escape with her son.
It is obvious that a person in Smith’s situation would not believe in God. The fact that his miserable experiences test his faith and eventually congeal his trust helps to make the entire torment worthy. It is also a fact that any horror movie can easily illustrate the dirtiness of sin and evil. Zombies are the pleasant and honest people who are forced to turn into blood thirsty devils due to certain reasons. Literally, every human being has the potential to become a zombie. These zombie movies are basically directed to scare people. But this ‘ I Am Legend’ beautifully illustrates the dirtiness of evil without clambering our pressure high.

Did you know that you can travel anywhere in the world in less than two hours, for less than $10 and without ever stepping out your front door? How? But, of course, through movies! Such traveling becomes especially more enjoyable when you are homebound, raising small children, on a budget, or simply without any vacation time.
How about a country youve never visited before? A country that for years was closed behind an iron curtain, inaccessible to visitors from the WestRussia? The movies that follow take you through the history of that magnificent country, showing you how Russian emperors ruled, lived, loved and fought, how Russian peasants worked, suffered, and rebelled, how Russian artists saw their country in colors, sounds and words, and how Western directors saw Russia as the unknown enemy that had to be penetrated with spies, intelligence, and drastic measures.
So, why not cook a Russian recipe, make some strong tea, rent a couple of these movies and invite your family to a real journey youll never forget? Expand your horizons together, as you explore a new culture in your own living room.
And, the movies are:

3. Andrei Rublev (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1969) This epic charts the life of the great icon painter through a turbulent period of 15th Century Russian history, a period marked by endless fighting between rival Princes and by Tatar invasions.

1. A Chef in Love (Nana Dzhordzhadze, 1997) The story of Pascal Ichak, a larger-than-life French traveler, bon vivant, and chef, who falls in love with Georgia and a Georgian princess in the early 1920s.

Benefits: If you love history, drama, and literature, these movies will educate you through images and dialogue, while also keeping you entertained. She wants to return to France immediately; he knows that they are captives and must watch every step
E. Films about the Cold War
Entertaining, suspenseful and intelligently done, these films give insights and make comments about the tension between the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. during the Cold War.
Benefits: You will be entertained but also challenged to think about how the struggle of power in political games affect the lives of everyday people. Thankfully, the Cold War is over and no major catastrophe happened while it was going on. This is a reminder that piece is always better than war and, therefore, worthy to pursue.
1. Doctor Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick, 1964) Air Force Colonel Jack Ripper goes utterly mad and sends his bomber wing to destroy the U.S.S.R. Drama, drama, drama, that is pretty much the only thing that is broadcast on television, along with reality television shows. A s more of those types of television shows come along, less sitcoms are show. In the eighties and nineties sitcoms where all the rage with many sitcoms running from 6 to 10 years. Shows like Growing Pains, Family Matters, Full House and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air were high in the ratings and shows that people would go to school or work talking about the next day.
Currently dramas like The O.C., 24, CSI, and Prison Break, and reality shows like Survivor and The Apprentice are the show that are discusses in school and at work. Sitcoms are no longer a hot topic. The main reason for that may be writers block. A lot of sitcoms that have come on in the last few years have been very predictable. It seems to be difficult to put a new spin on a sitcom. Proof of that can be seen in the numerous failed spin-offs of popular shows like Seinfeld and Friends, as well as the failed That 80s Show.
With the lack of unique idea and creativity presented in sitcoms, reality and drama show will continue to dominate primetime television spots.

Too Many Television Shows For Our Teens To Have Shared Memories As Adults When I was a child and then a teenager, in the 60s and 70s, the only new television programs airing in the U.S. were on ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS. My point is that beca... Reality TV - Nothing To Watch Even though there are lots of ways for people to entertain themselves, television is still probably the biggest avenue for entertainment. I really do not go to the movies often, maybe three times a year, usually for big screen productions like Lord of the Rings or any Star Wars episode or the new King Kong, once in a while for an off-beat drama or comedy. Thats not to say I dont watch flicksI do, just in the privacy of my own place. The problem is that audiences annoy me with the talking and the chewing and the crunching and the snorting already. I have a control issue about my viewing environment, okay?
Anyway, I can count on one hand, assuming none of my digits have been hacked off, the number of so called horror movies I have seen in a theater in my life. The last oneAlien, 1979. The last one I purposely rented to see was The Blair Witch Project, 1999. Of course, I have tuned in on the usual stuff around Halloween to get my fill of Freddie, Michael and the gang. Its like anything else, when I want to laugh, I watch comedy; when I want to think, I watch a documentary. I know what I want to experience, when I want to experience it. And once in a blue moon, I want to be scared.
Such was the case this past weekend. So I went to see Hostel. That seemed to be the movie to see for horror.
A couple of things. First, Im not good with the gore stuff; Reanimator comes to mind as a great example of gore gone nuts. Second, Im not big on the shock scene; you knowbump in the night shots. But that is exactly what I look for when I want to be frightened. They work. They scare the living crap out of me. So I have a few uneasy nights afterwards, maybe a diminished appetite for a few hours. Eventually, Im able to dismiss the movies reality and Im good to go for another two or three years.
Not so with Hostel.
I should have known something was up when the ticket guy at the box office warned me about the content and offered a money-back refund if I left before the end. But no, I figured it was all part of the hype, sort of like when theaters handed out vomit bags for Mark of the Devil back in 1970.
I was wrong, really wrong! I should have heeded his words.
My rating system for movies is quite simple: two eyes wide opened (great; i.e., never blinked), two eyes opened (good; i.e., stayed awake all the way through), one eye opened (fair; i.e., moments of drowsiness) and finally two eyes closed (poor; i.e., fell asleep).
Hostel got two-eyes-shut-so-tight-I-had-to-have-them-opened-with-a-tire-iron. My lids involuntarily closed soon after a long steel drill bit gouged its way into the bare thigh of a screaming pleading young male torture prop. It was only five seconds into what would be about a five minute longfelt like a lifetimeassault of pure, unadulterated, uncompromising, unapologetic gore. I almost didnt make it; my stomach swirled. But eventually the darkness and screaming ceased. There was a momentary break to race the plot along and propel the hero into the inevitable final twenty-five minutes of salacious slaughter and desperate depravity. My armpits were dripping like an uncapped fire hydrant.
When the disfiguring rampage began anew, I slunk my body as far down as it could go without touching the sticky theater floor, squeezed my eye lids tight, and held on as I rode the run amok rollercoaster of bloody body tissue. I soon learned that you cant get low enough in stadium seating.
I wont go into details of the finale; well actually I can’t, because quite honestly I didnt see much. But I dont need to go into it. I’ll just skip to my opinion: this movie is not horror. It is wrong!
It uses a true events premise based loosely on an undocumented practice in Thailand in which poor souls allow themselves to be murdered by paying customers in order to collect insurance money for the families. In this case, it is a poor, remote, lawless Slovakian town whose only commerce is the business of luring young healthy humans to a dank rundown remote warehouse where they are bought as sacrificial lambs for wealthy troubled men who pay handsomely for the opportunity to torture and kill. Live Americans fetch $25,000 a piece, Europeans $15,000, and all others $5,000 for the locals who bring them in; the youth Hostel being a big player in the scheme. Everyone in town is in on it; after all, there seems to be an endless revenue stream coming from a lot of messed up CEOsmen bored with prostitutes and Vegas. It gives a whole new definition to a cottage industry.
Anyway, the reason I contend it is not horror is because it didnt scare me. It beat me over the head with lifeless limbs and Dolby dread. If I want horror, I want to watch a ten year girl munching on her dads detached bloody arm in living dead delight. Or I want to see a slimy alien pop out unexpectedly from an unsuspecting space traveler’s stomach. Now that is horror. I can deal with that. At the end of the day, I can say its all pretend.
But Hostel delights in the graphic detail of mans worst inhumanity to man. It cashes in on the reality of snuff films. It profits from the truths of Dr. Josef Mengele. It fills male teenage heads, the primary (and possibly only) target audience, with the most unimaginable of actual human potential. It finds and scrapes the bottom of what I thought was a bottomless pit of DNA gone bad. And it ends with a hopeless sense that nothing has been righted; that it will be torture business as usual.
And the movie is lucrative and that is wrong! The only thing more wrong is its rating. I am astounded that the movie did not receive an NC-17 rating. Astounded! The MPAA was either asleep at the switch or under the lobby thumb of Abramoff.
As far as Tarantinos endorsement is concerned, what is he thinking about? I just dont know. I mean he has a right to do whatever he wants, as long as it isnt harmful. But somehow this movie seems harmful. It’s not about scaring. It’s about indulging in the worst of the worst.
And by no means am I off the hook on this either. I paid to see it. I was wrong too!
Look, I’m a First Amendment lackey. Lion’s Gate, the production company, has every right to create and promote what they want. But that doesn’t mean that what they choose to do is exempt from being judged right or wrong, and boy are they wrong.
It will be a long time before I see a horror movie in a theater again. Maybe never. I think Ill just dust off Plan Nine from Outer Space the next time I have an urge for a scare.
Pathetically, thats more my style.
