Why it will fail
“CinemaNow will only allow the movies to be played only on a single computer”
“Movielink will allow the movie to be copied onto a DVD, from which the movie can be downloaded to two other computers, but it cannot be played on a conventional DVD player.
Movies will also not play on handheld players.

So I can pay for the DVD, in much the same way as I would if buying it in a store, and can then only play it on my computer. Are they insane? The lifetime of a DVD is almost infinitely more than that of a computer. I would speculate that few of us still use a computer that we had in 2003 - am I right? Whereas I’ve got videos and DVDs pre-dating 2003 by many years and intend to keep them for many more years, that was the whole point of buying them in the first place. This has to be a classic case of not thinking something through and simply rushing to market to be seen as a “player”. The hare has lost already and the tortoise will be triumphant.

It gets worse. The downloaded movies are [a] more expensive than if purchased in the store and [b] do not contain the bonus footage on the store DVDs. So where is the incentive for me to download a movie again? I’ve forgotten. Furthermore, where are the savings that a realised in online distribution (through not producing DVDs for a start) passed on to the consumer? How on earth did the price manage to increase?

I don’t think this will fly, it will be interesting to see if I’m proved wrong.

Roger Ebert, together with Rex Reed, is arguably one of the best movie writers in the business. I read his columns regularly.

In his review of Syriana, Ebert forwards a very interesting thesis:

“The movie’s plot is so complex we’re not really supposed to follow it, we’re supposed to be surrounded by it. Since none of the characters understand the whole picture, why should we?”

I never thought about a situation in which ALL the characters would be confused about what’s really going on…

If that is the case, does the script itself need to reflect that confusion?

And does this mean that the script should end up confusing the audience, by design? It’s hard to buy that.

The first chapter of Faulkner’s unforgettable The Sound and the Fury comes to mind…

But in the later chapters Faulker lets us discover the genius of that first and utterly confusing first chapter. At the end of the book, we also agree with the author that the first chapter HAD TO BE that confusing in order both to understand one of the characters and also savor the aesthetic structure of the whole edifice.

However, I cannot think of myself leaving a movie more confused than I was in the beginning.

RASHOMON is an example where it is totally legitimate to reflect a LACK OF CERTAINTY. But Kurosawa is never confused about his take on the relativity of “facts.” He is very CLEAR about lack of clarity in life.

Syriana seems to be opening the gates for a new post-9/11 kind of “post structuralism” where we’re permitted to confuse the audience as a matter of “high concept” and not only the style.

On 7th April Monday at 9:00pm Bodyshock: “I Am The Elephant Man” was broadcast on Channel 4. Upon watching the programme an apparent microcosm of humanity, encapsulating a story with all the notions of hardship, plight, love, dignity, sorrow and optimism. We followed the life of Huang Chuncai a sufferer of neurofibromatosis: the same ailment that afflicted John Merrick - the Elephant Man, in the run-up to and after an operation to remove some the 20kg of tumour he has on his face. We saw his poor farming family, we heard from his perennially weeping/crying mother and felt his terrible pain and thanked God this disease is not afflicting any one of us or our families.

The producers did not skimp on the extreme close-ups of Huang mid-operation or choose not to film an adult pig being slaughtered, wailing while jets of blood was gushing from it’s heart to the earth.

Upon watching I realized I’m watching less of a documentary and more of the traveling-circus Haung and his family so dignifiedly refused to be a part of. And I thought this is just an obscene semblance of a credible heartrending factual program when in fact it’s little more than the abhorrent of reality TV shows.

We watched Huang tortured, emotionally and physically to learn more about China? To learn more about humanity? To learn more about about neurofibromatosis? Or as a form of sordid voyeurism, to look how yucky this puddle of a human being can survive, and feel how lucky we are?

I think my feelings are justified by Channel 4, choosing to show us slaughtered pigs and surgical images to entertain, their lack of consideration and respect having the show sponsored by the ‘Beautifully Formed’ Volkswagen Passat and how ending the programme with no noticeable conclusion. For shame.

I must admit I was first beguiled by the panorama of it all. The scenes were beautifully shot and the emotions of Ennis and Jack really got to me. I even shed a tear at the end of the film as I realized the love so desired would never be.

Of course, Im speaking of Brokeback Mountain. The story of two gay sheepherders struggling with a love that could never be. But, could it?

It wasnt until much later when the fog of the beautiful music and the lush scenery that Ang Lee so beautifully brought to the screen faded from my memory. It wasnt until my heart stop pining away for all the loves lost in my own life could I begin to see that this story is a depiction of lies.

Ironically, this Brokeback Mountain is supposed to be a story of two very strong men. Two men who brave the elements and arent afraid of hard work. What they are afraid of is the truth. The truth that should have been revealed to their spouses and families.

The only moral to this story is that there are people in this world who are clinging to relationships built on false hope and lies with partners that, once the going gets tough, pine away for someone else rather than placing their concentration at homewhere it ought to be.

Of course being with someone who brings laughter, and no stress, is alluring. Its not nearly as much fun to remain with a partner worrying over paying the rent and electric bill.

Even as much as we all yearn for a relationship full of passion and no worries of money, the reality is that life (and relationships) comes with the full package, including all the boring stuff required to keep life going.

This movie idealizes love affairs outside the primary relationship and does nothing to depict how lives can be shattered when the people involved are too weak to stand up to their responsibility and place their emphasis on the home they helped create.

I have a strong feeling Brokeback Mountain will win best picture at the Oscars, but Im left wishing a movie about men who stick with their relationship regardless of hardship, whether they be gay or straight, were up for nomination. Now, that movie would hold my interest.

After the delay caused by Hurricane Katrina, the cast of the Real World Key West are ready to open their Mystic Tan salon. That night, they make their usual rounds of the bars, but this time theyre also promoting their opening the next day. On opening day, John is worn out by his marketing efforts the night before, and he decides to take a nap in the closet.

Paula Meronek is aghast at this both at John for taking the nap and at her roommates for not being outraged as well.

That night, the group is out drinking again, and Paulas resentment is unleashed. In case you ever need to spot a drunken Paulie Walnuts in the wild for yourself, heres what to look for

1)	Repeated shouting of the phrase, Kiss my aaaaass!
 2)	Occasional use of a baby voice.
 3)	Out-of-control outbursts.
 4)	Frustrated growling when words fail.
 5)	Panicked gulping and near-hyperventilation.

The first three are exhibited in the van on the way home and directed at John. At first, he ignores her. But she will not relent, and John rips back into her, calling attention to her anorexia and self-mutilating behavior. The entire van gets quiet but his comments are painfully accurate.

Later, Paula then adds the fourth and fifth stages of Paulie Walnuts to her behavior for the evening. Strangely, her anger is directed at Jose Tapia and Zach.

The next morning, Paula pieces together the night by talking to the other housemates. Janelle confirms that she did start the fight with John.

Meanwhile, John and Zach decompress from the evening at the salon. John says the only solution he sees is to not be around Paula when shes drinking.

Later, at the salon, when Paula arrives, John approaches her and says he cant be around her anymore when shes boozing. She acknowledges her actions and the two seem to make peace.
