A set of the USA airlines is going to offer their clients the Internet access directly during the flight in the near future. So, on Tuesday Jet Blue Airways will allow the passengers of one of the planes to use e-mail and the system of the instant messaging. Other companies - American Airlines, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines - are going to offer a wider spectrum of the Internet-services the nearest months. However, it is necessary to pay for them, The New York Times supposes.
It will be impossible to enter the network during the takeoff and landing, but at a high altitude the laptop owners can send messages through the worldwide web. But Virgin America intends to provide with the Internet even those who travel without a notebook computer or a smartphone - it will be possible to use the special screen in its liners. Now the Virgin passengers can already order food and drinks through a small computer.
In spite of the fact that the new technology will allow to provide telecommunication onboard, the airlines representatives do not hasten to give such an opportunity. The other passengers can dislike that a certain talkative fellow traveller within several hours discusses with someone the flight. But if there are several dozens of such travellers, the travel can turn into a true nightmare.
The companies admit that currently the Internet onboard of a plane is doomed to work much more slowly, than on the ground, the technicians are to resolve numerous problems. It is one of the reasons on which meanwhile the users should not pay for it. Anyway, JetBlue will become the first air carrier in the USA which will allow the clients to get into the worldwide web.
As the recent researches of the company Forrester Research have shown, 25 % of passengers would agree to give 10 dollars to use the Internet at the flight duration from two till four hours. Already 45 % of the interrogated passengers are ready to pay at the flight duration of more than four hours.
The American Airlines and Virgin America promise to give to the users the worldwide web access already in spring of 2008. Alaska Airlines with the same purpose is going to use the special satellite system - the Internet will appear in one of the company liners in the second quarter of 2008. In case of success, by the end of 2009 all the Alaska Airlines planes will be equipped with the proper equipment.
