Wine Coolers - Essential Wine Accessory
There are products that are designed to chill wine that are called "wine coolers." Some of these wine coolers are just buckets of ice while others may be expensive electric wine coolers. The other kind of wine cooler is an alcoholic beverage that is made of wine mixed with fruit juice or other beverages. Although I really do like the later form of wine cooler, here we will be discussing the former type of wine cooler.
A wine cooler is an absolutely essential accessory if you are serving white wine. White wine should always, ALWAYS be served chilled. Notice that the key word here is "chilled," and not "cold." There is a difference.
Refrigerators are set to cool everything placed in them to the same temperature, and that temperature will not be the best one for wine. Light, sparkling, and very sweet white wines should be served 50 degrees Fahrenheit (no higher) and Chardonnays can be chilled a little less than that. Even some red wines will taste better when they are lightly chilled.
Most of us know what a wine cooler looks like and the basic principle of how it functions. Most of the nonelectric versions of wine coolers are shaped much like a bucket and vary in size, from small enough to hold only one bottle of wine, to large enough to hold up to six bottles of wine. Sometimes the coolant is simply ice. Other times the coolant might be ice pack or even a gel. Usually, nonelectric wine coolers are made of wood or plastic with a thermal liner.
Electric wine coolers are much more sophisticated, and much easier to control. Ideal temperature can be preset on many models, and the wine will be held at the temperature constantly.
